I haven't graduate with a bachelors yet (very, very, very unfortunately). I hold a national certification that says I have adequate knowledge to work as a pharmacy technician in most pharmacy settings (retail, hospital, rehab, etc). I am also licensed in my state to do this.

Retail is usually the option new techs have to take because hospital pharmacy tends to use not just the math and attention to detail that retail requires, but also advanced mathematical knowledge, working with strong chemicals in the IV rooms, etc. Hospitals use X amount of retail experience to determine whether they should consider a person for their hospital or not.

The food chain for techs usually works like this: independent or chain retail pharmacies > small hospital pharmacy (less than 200-ish beds usually) > university or large hospital > pharmacy tech II and III. Big hospitals will often have advanced and specialized technician jobs as well beyond just IV room, controlled substances, and techs II and III. In retail there is small room for advancement from regular pharm tech to senior pharm tech, but that's about it.

I probably wouldn't work as a sales rep. I am not a very good salesperson (too honest).

Research requires a bachelors and sometimes a masters degree.

Thanks for the ideas and for thinking of me!

Excellent! I would love both of those things!

I have a small update. I followed up with the Walgreens I was hoping to work at, but the pharmacy manager (super nice guy) isn't hiring right now which is super common with everyone else I have followed up with.

I was able to reach someone in HR at a chain grocery store pharmacy around here today and she said she was going to try to schedule me for an interview sometime soon at one of their stores. I am very excited about this! There are some big details that have to get worked out though (work hours and distance I would have to travel), but this is overall an encouraging thing. I hope she actually calls back for an interview though. Keep those prayers and good thoughts coming, please!

Well, being a drug rep usually pays pretty well. You have to go to the dr offices and try to get the docs to use your company's drugs, set up lunches, etc. However, a lot of doctors can be very short and/or intimidating so it can be difficult and I am not sure what degree, if any, you need for that but I would imagine maybe some college at least.

Have you tried the walgreens corporate offices in Deerfield to see if they have any knowledge of openings in the area you'd qualify for? I went to apply there before for a call center position and everyone was really nice. Just a thought. I really wish you luck>

    Great points, girl.

I have another mini-update. I have an interview on Thursday! Holy cow! I am so nervous. I haven't been on an official interview for a year.

Thank you so, so much for your prayers.

I do have one other major request. I hope it's not too much to ask, but I would love if you all could pray, send good thoughts, good vibes, etc that the schedule they want me to work (assuming I am offered the job) will work with our family schedule. This is another issue that has prevented me from working in the past because my husband's schedule is kind of weird and we don't have money for daycare/nanny/babysitter to cover the hours I am at school and/or work. I covet any prayers or thoughts you would like to devote to these matters.

Ack! Now I need to go finish the CE article I was working on and prep for the interview.

I had an interview today, but it was basically a disaster. I know a lot of you probably already saw on my Facebook page, so I won't retell the story here, but I didn't get the job. Hopefully there will be bigger and better pharmacies that want to hire me.

Please keep your prayers and positive thoughts coming. I really appreciate it. I applied for 3 more jobs with medical staffing agencies today for outpatient pharmacy at the VA hospital. I also applied for an IV/admixture position, but I'm not totally qualified for that because they prefer prior experience in the IV room.
