Smile Big Brother Big Sister requirements/background check?

My husband and I were thinking of doing some volunteer work and maybe sponsoring a child for Christmas. We looked into Salvation Army and Toys for Tots but my husband wants to meet the child and have it be a little more personal rather than just drop off a toy at the mall.

Appearantly, the only program that does something like that is Big Brother Big Sister. The problem is that there are background checks. Of course, I understand the reason for doing those and agree with them, but I'm wondering if I could be ineligible since I am not in the US legally. Does anybody know what kind of background checks are done?

I've had a criminal background checks done on me in order to be on the leases for both of the apartments my husband and I have lived in. I gave them my name and my ITIN and there were no problems. Would the background checks that Big Brother Big Sister do differ from the kind they do at apartment complexes?

Thanks, any info is appreciated. =)

I am pretty sure that an ITIN is not relevant for a criminal background check.

Hi Pretty..I use to work for this organization..what they mostly look for is any felony stuff or you have been reported to CPS (child protective services). They will also check your driving too..to see if you had any speeding tickets..stuff like that..because once you are matched up..you will drive him/her to events..and your outings..this is a wonderful program. I worked for them for 5 years as a Match Support Specialist. if you have any other questions, please PM met..

aww how cute.. yeah I know what you mean I would like to do something more personal as well.. maybe through a local church?? Then you could meet the family. I know what you mean - I signed up to get an angel through JC Penny which I think is going through the Salvation Army - and I picked this one child because it just asked for "baby things" when all of the other ones had specific items such as "Dora pajamas" so I felt really sad for this poor little baby.. but now I wish I could ask the parents ok so what do you really need?? Clothes? Diapers? Toys? Food?

Hope took us to the bridge.. faith got us across!

Thanks Christy. I will definitely PM you. =)

Tasksgirl-- I went to the mall Black Friday and I saw the tree as well but I didn't pick a child, mostly because the lady there kept hovering over us and it made us really uncomfortable. They are doing Toys for Tots every where, so we're going to do that. What I thought was weird is that on the tree, most of the names weren't even children. There was a lot of adults on there. Some were in their 40s and they asked for tshirts and socks and CDs and stuff like that. It suprised me because I thought it was just for "tots".
We went to the Big Brother Big Sister office today and got an application. It asks for a SSN, so I don't know if we're going to be able to do it. I hope we can. I was in a program like BBBS when I was around 1213 back in FL and it was sooo cool. I got paired up with a really nice lady and my brother got paired up with her husband. We still keep in touch now, years later, and they're really great people.

    Thanks for the help, Christy.

It turns out my husband is getting deployed in March, so I guess we're not going to be able to commit to anything long term. Oh, well. Maybe next year.

    Thanks, anyway. =)

I can't because I'll be moving back to FL and I don't drive anyway.

But you can choose to do it individually or as a couple. The woman I spoke to at their office told me that if you do it as a couple, you most likely will be paired up with a little boy rather than a girl.

I know they're strong on committment and that's to be understood. Will one be unapproved if they have even only one speeding ticket?

There were a couple of other local agencies that wouldn't accept anyone with even one speeding ticket or charged with a misdemeanor (whether found guilty or not, I don't remember).
