    Ideas for making money/selling things

I was wondering if any of you have advice. Hubby is a really good welder, and also has a very artistic eye. Welding is not his main job but he does a lot of it at the ranch where he works and also jobs for people in town. Over the past several years, people visiting town or the ranch will see something made by him, and track us down, and ask for something. He's made chandeliers, coat racks, gates, etc. People really love the work he does and will then tell others to contact us. We've done no 'advertising' on our own. He's not business minded and I was too busy.

I've been thinking for a while that I should make a portfolio or a website to show to people so we can make more money and reach more people since it's all been word of mouth.

Have any of you ever expanded a side job/hobby into a more money making venture? If so, what do I need to know? How do you track things for tax purposes.
    Our timeline so far:
January 2008: hubby and I get married
After a lot of bad advice, and a false start w/an immigration "expert" I finally find I2US, read everything I can, and eventually begin the process.
May 14th, 2010- first appointment, eligible!
July 15th - waiver appointment in CDJ
July 20th- DHL arrives. Approved! Thank you so much I2US.

Get a permit/license from the city where you live and that way you can pass out business cards to family and friends and to whoever wants your services, that way you don't get in trouble.
    I hope it helps...

etsy.com is a great place to start and has been featured on numerous shows including the one I am going to tell you about which is nate berkus, go to thenateshow.com to see how other people have started businesses like yours - a lot of his featured guest have websites and blogs that they sell their re-finished funiture. I hope that helps - I would love to do it but I don't have the time right now.

for tax purposes I keep a running spread sheet in Excel. As for getting the word out there, how about craft shows or flea markets? tell him to get a bunch of things together and also a book and go to different shows. Just a thought.
