    Advice on the Chicago Area

I wasn't really sure where to post this, so I won't be offended if it is "moved" to the proper location.

I am considering moving to the Chicago area. I was wondering if anyone could give advice on Chicago neighborhoods. I would be commuting to Evanston 3-4 times a week. I'm in my mid-20's and have no kids (not worried about schools). I'm visiting this coming week so if there are any suggestions on what neighborhoods to check out, I'd appreciate any advice.

Do you want to buy something or do you want to rent?

What is your price range for both?

Do you have a car or are you planning on using public transportation?

What do you find most desirable about neighborhoods?

How far do you want your commute to be?

There are a bunch of far north Chicago neighborhoods that are decent, but typically, the further south you go towards "the Loop/downtown/commercial district", the more desirable, less crime, more trendy, and more expensive.

If you want to stay in the city limits, the Lakeview neighborhood is kind of up and coming far north neighborhood and not as rough as some of the other far north neighborhoods (like Uptown, Albany Park, etc). A lot of the type of neighborhood you will live in will depend on what you are looking for as far as living conditions, space, and location.

Parking can be a in the city, but some places offer garage space for additional monthly money.

Evanston is probably the only suburb I personally like as far as Chicago suburbs go. It doesn't feel much like a suburb. That is probably why I can tolerate it. It is generally safe, there is a very large downtown area, you have access to buses, the L, and the Metra (commuter train), and is old school Chicago cuteness. It really feels like a far, far north neighborhood of Chicago, in my opinion. You may find something you like there, but the rent will probably be roughly the same price as many areas in the city.

I would be renting, ideally $1,000-1,100 would cover rent and utilities.

I currently have a car and am not sure whether I'd keep it or not. I was thinking of bringing it and deciding after I got there. I generally prefer public transit when readily available.

I enjoy a liveliness but not anything too loud. It would be nice to be within walking distance of restaurants and cafe's. Being near grocery stores is also important.

30 minutes to under one hour, but if I'm using public transit and can read that is ideal.

People have mentioned lakeview, i intend on checking ir out. monthly money. I'll definitely be touring Evanston proper. Thanks!

If you are looking for just a one bedroom, you will be able to find something really nice with your monthly rent money.

If you are looking for a two bedroom, finding something nice and somewhat updated in a nice neighborhood will be a lot more challenging.

If you live in the Lakeview neighborhood, you may have to take a combination of buses and trains to get to Evanston. Have you looked at a map of the subway system in Chicago? This might help you make your decision.

Are you ready for a lot of cold weather?

Yes I did visit. I really liked the lakeview neighborhood and Lincoln Park as well. I ultimately decided not to move to Chicago though, I'll be attending graduate school in the Bay Area.

That is a much better choice in my opinion, but I have a CA bias.

Haha, yeah I have the same bias. Born and raised in California but haven't been back since the end of high school! It should be a nice homecoming
