Lol! Ummm...daily!! I work mostly in Ob..so then it's not bad...its a different kind of bodily fluids..buy usually not smelly! But I do also have scheduled shifts on the medical/surgical floor..and then there is a lot of poop vomit and pee!
I work nights and we don't have any nursing assistants on night shift so we do everything! When u get a really stinky poop that you have to clean up a little vicks vapor rub under ur nose goes a long way!

As far as demanding PTs and families go..I just try to "kill them with kindness". In my experience if you are nice and try to accommodator all their requests..as long a they are within reason..it is a lot easier for everyone! It can be hard sometimes though!

Oh no. That is not good news. I'm sorry you have to deal with that every night when you work med/surg.

It's not everynight..but definitely enough that you "get used to it." It just becomes part of the job! There are units where u probably wouldn't have to deal with it as much..but I dont think you could ever completely avoid it if you are working in a hospital.

I did not get accepted to the university I wanted. I'm going back to the university I was at a few years ago and am going to try to finish my gen eds there, then try to transfer again. I'm still having a dilemma about what to study because my university doesn't have a nursing program.

Great thread!! Cupcake, I finished all my general education course at my local community college, and have only 1 class to finish. I will be starting nursing schOol at a very strict school in august. I am very nervous..because I just had a baby, I started in the 3 year program (mostly gen. Ed. Courses, which I have take) which I easy to get into. What I am scared about, though, is only about 50-60 percent of those students advance to second year, which is when clinicals start!! I am excited though, because my sister (who is a year younger than m got into the program, so we will be doing this together!

Great job Nikki! and Great Family support! The nursing programs are def hard, I know when I attended a PAX Review class, the class was FULL, and I remember the professor saying, "see how full this class is?, Don't worry.. half of you will not make it through the nursing program" I was like Whoaaaaa, so much for motivation ...ugh... but she made sense later when she explained why she said that. She was just being blunt and honest. I mean you really have to have the drive and motivation to get through it.

cupcake, although you didn't get in, try again! I know people that have tried up to 6 times to get into the program of their choice, and rejection gets tough, but eventually they do get in! I would def suggest to get the pre-reqs done at a local community(saves you money), then transferring to a university. Good luck!

I had a looooong talk with my adviser today and now I need to ask you nurses for some insight.

My university does not have a nursing program. I have to transfer to somewhere that has a nursing program. I have to apply for nursing program 1 year before I will actually be ready, which means my prerequisites will still be in progress. My adviser said this makes me a less desirable candidate.

Right now, I'm still about 1.5 years away from meeting all nursing school prerequisites. My university has strict rules about math prerequisites to even get into biology classes so I'm emailing possible next semester professors to see if they would be willing to let me take the math class and their biology classes simultaneously. I'm being held hostage by a math prerequisite because otherwise, all I have left in school to do is science classes... tons of science classes. This leads me to the dilemma.

My adviser is recommending I major in biology, graduate with a BS in biology, and then apply to a master's program for nursing because he said even though the master's program will add about 1.5 more years than if I just transfer and graduate with a BSN, I will have a master's degree and my earning potential will be greater (according to him).

Do master's nursing programs actually train a person for nursing, like with clinical hours and everything? I don't think I want to be a research nurse because otherwise, the BS in biology would make total sense. I also want to avoid taking the GRE, but he said that some programs may waive the GRE requirement in lieu of a really good GPA.

He also said that I could always try to go pre-med, too, and see how it goes, but I know what med school requires, and I don't know if I have the time or smarts for it. I'm more interested in the role of a doctor versus the role of a nurse, but the ultimate goal of all of this is to make a better life for my family in as little time as possible...

Back to the regular nursing route: Did any of you ladies have to take ethics and/or statistics to meet your nursing program pre-requisites? My adviser told me it may be a good idea even though the school I'm thinking of transferring to doesn't require those because it will make me a more unique candidate.

    I'm confused!
