I am a Spanish Dual Immersion teacher and I love it, but I work 60 hours + a week and keeping up this pace is gettig harder every year.I want to continue being a DI teacher nd would eventually like to work in Bilingual Special Education.
If I were to change careers I would love to work in family or immigration law or be a a family doc. or registered dietitian (but I cannot pass o chem so that is a problem).

Seems like there are a lot of people interested in labor & delivery & immigration!!!

@ Los G, I have looked into what is required to become a certified doula because it is less medically intense than becoming a certified midwife and I don't think I would necessarily want all the medical responsibility of being a nurse-midwife, but I love the idea of being an advocate for patients during labor & delivery, helping to coach the woman & partner and providing post-partum assistance with BFing, infant care, etc. It seems that the most important thing with being a doula is having lots of practical experience, shadowing or apprenticing with another doula, and then the for the actual certification there is a course that you have to take. Doulas of North American (DONA) is a good resource. The biggest downside now to becoming a doula is that, having a young family of my own, the hours could be very difficult because in theory you need to be available 24/7. I think it's something I would love to do once my kids are older, as a sort of later in life career.

I really like my current job a lot. It's interesting and I really believe in what I'm doing, so it's a lot more than a just a paycheck to me. At this point I can't imagine myself doing anything else. But, fantasies are still fun, so here are a few dream jobs:

I think it might be cool to earn a living designing databases and software programs to help businesses be more efficient. For example, having my own business where small businesses could hire me to come in and look at how they work and then try to design a database/software system tailored specifically to their needs that would save them time and money...... and to do that while charging a fair price for it.

Another thing I'd absolutely love to do would to be a "homesteader," growing a significant portion of my own food myself and raising some animals for meat, dairy, wool, etc. In order to actually make a living and have money to pay for utilities, gasoline, etc. I'd have to become really good at some skills and be able to sell either some service or some product from my farm, so I'd probalby have one or two home-based businesses. Selling homemade baked goods might be one, and perhaps I could start a blog related to country living or something and get a little bit of income from that as well. My favorite book in the whole world (besides the Bible of course) since before I could even read, is Back to Basics Since my earliest childhood I've always dreamed of living on a homestead and learning the skills to be more independent. Mr. G was kind of raised this way so he'd be the perfect partner in it. His parents never had jobs working for other people. They always lived off the bounty of the land and made money by selling the extra they had, whether that was fruits, meat, etc.

But those are just fantasies. Either one could happen someday, but if they don't and I continue to do what I'm doing currently, I'll still have a very happy and satisfying work-life.

All I can promise is that my intentions are good.

I am a U.S. citizen by birth, married to a man born in Mexico. He received his legal permanent residence visa in June of 2006 through my sponsorship and became a proud US citizen on November 18, 2009. We did not utilize the services of an attorney during any point in our immigration and naturalization journey. Although we were successfull without legal counsel, I would not advise anyone to make such a decision without very careful consideration. Every case is different and what was right for us and our case might not be the best choice for you and yours. Click here to view the details of our case.

Okay, I don't know who Samantha Brown is so I googled the name...is she the person on the Travel Channel?

And I used to dream about opening a spa/bed & breakfast type of place in Mexico...I think that would be wonderful...maybe someday when my husband and I are a bit older and hopefully have a little more investment $$$.

I love the homesteading idea, it's so intriguing....I've always wondered if I could really do it long-term or if I would start to go through technology/capitalism/consumerism withdrawal....not necessarily a bad thing though!

OMG now that you bring that up I'm in a similar boat. I would LOVE to move to El Salvador along the beach, have a shack made of wood and palm fronds and make a living catching and selling fish from the ocean. Not even lying.

And yes, S.Brown is from the Travel Channel
