    Icky Ears!

    Hi guys,

I was hoping someone might be able to help me out here.

I have a 6.5 year old bullmastiff. He's about 130 and has the floppy years. (Think of Beast from the Sandlot or Hooch from Turner and Hooch.) I routine clean his ears with the little sour apple scented ear wipes and some times he has a lot of goop but most times it's similar to the amount when a human cleans their ears on a regular basis.

This past month though, I can clean his ears every other day and it's like Shrek pulling out goobs of wax! He keeps his ears pulled down and they are now all scratched up from him stickin his big ol' foot in there. He doesn't appear to have ear mites, the canals don't appear blocked, he can hear just fine when he wants to (Cookie? YES! Bath? Can't hear me).

We are seriously strapped for cash so going to the vet is out at this time. Any ideas to give my boy some clean ears for more than a day?

Just rmember: bullmastiff....big and stubborn with sensative baby ears!

Thanks in advance and a slobbery kiss from Jager

At the petstore they have a liquid that you can buy $6.00 to put drops in the ear and it fizzles like peroxide. That's what we use to use for kokoa and of course pompoo now.

My Josie (lab) had an issue with reocurring ear infections a year ago that would only get better with antibiotics. Cleaning them is great maintenance, but it will likely not cure the infection. (Sorry that isn't good news.)

As for maintenance, my vet told me to make sure and clean her ears with the stuff Alonso mentions everytime she gets her head wet (and also once a week). Water gets trapped in floppy ears and can lead to infection if it doesn't dry good.
