Hello,

I am an adopted child of an American citizen. My father came to the United States in 1916 when he was 14 years old and came back to the old country to marry but unfortunately World War II broke out so he came back to the US without his wife and after the war ended the country was in isolation and no one could get in our out. Because my father had immigrated before the communist power took over he was allowed to return and visit his family but could not take them back to the U.S. Due to the long times of seperation they were unable to have kids so they adopted a son (me). In which point my father was a US citizen and I was 8 years of age. I have been to the U.S and so has my mother but unfortunately both are deceased. I was wondering if i could get citizenship or permanent residence from my father. I have all original documents of adoption, my fathers passport and certificate of citizenship. Also i have half of my first cousins who are born in the U.S. since my fathers brother got married there. I was wondering if it is possible for me to get some kind of permanent status in the U.S.? Thank you Tomi

Hi,
I would recommend consulting a lawyer.

I know that you must meet certain criteria to claim US citizenship based on parentage.
Not sure if adopted "adult" children who reside overseas can derive citizenship from ONE US citizen parent that is now deceased. A lot has to do with when the adoption took place as the laws changed numerous times.

I think that at one time, your father could have filed for you and it would have been derived but now that he is deceased, I am unsure.

Definitely consult a lawyer who is familiar with the ever changing laws.
