EAD while on sick leave

HELP!! It appears I am going to need some emergency surgery while waiting for my EAD to come through. I only applied a week ago, my H1B expires the end of Feb, and I'm wondering if anyone knows, can i use vacation and/or sick time while i'm in that supposed NOT working period between my H1B and EAD coming? I'm waiting to hear from my employer about what they do in these cases...but i'm freaking out!!!

I'm not sure if being employed and actually working are one in the same. I would think that if your employer is willing to allow you to "take vacation" while your EAD is pending, then you are not officially working, you are simply employed. Some employers will accept proof of applying for renewal of an EAD to continue your employment.
