oh wow Jenny! Those are beautiful! I started making squares to practice but I'm not sure I am starting it off right. When you start sewing, is it supposed to automatically stay together on the edge or are you supposed to go back and forth at the very beginning. Stupid question i know.

Here is how I did it.....
1) Your best friend is an iron and cutting mat and blade.
2) cut strips of fabric 4 1/2 inches or however you thick you want them and sew all your fabric together in tubes.
3) Use the mat to cut through the strips and take apart at the seam where you need to

Does this make sense...Its really easy...these quilts are called "Trip around the world" And they are soooo easy....I have some others but I haven't attempted those yet.

Actually we have a "mary Jos" in Gastonia and OMG its a warehouse of fabric and you can get fat quarters cheap....they only send you 6 sqares so if you waiting maybe 10 years you could have enough for a quilt :) jk, its a good way to see fabric but I like to go in and see everything and layer it until it looks right. It takes me FOREVER to get my color scheme but as you see, I think I did well! :)

I've made dresses, wrap skirts, pants, (I need to take pics) I love it...I haven't really mastered shirts....I need to, my boobs are too big and my waist is small so I need to, I love making clothes...becuase you can cater to your body.

I'm yet to purchase a Serger. Ya, ppl been telling me I don't need a serger to sew and just do an overcast. But, to me, sewing is not complete without a Serger. Blaming it on my mom,..lol.. I grew up with sewing machine and serger.

How did you finish your quilts off Jenny?

JennyM
01-09-2008, 10:38 PM
I left the hole at the bottom center and pulled the quilt through and then did an invisible stitch to finish it off.

beautiful quilts!

my mom bought me a sewing machine for my wedding and i can't wait to learn how to use it. it's been on the back burner because of our new house and all but i'm going to need to make curtains and slipcovers and i would LOVE to learn to do clothes. do you do the quilts by hand or machine? i dunno if i'd have the patience but they are so beautiful and i'm inspired to try.

I've always wanted to make my own quilt so I could choose my own fabric. I like quilts, but everytime I see them someplace they're never what I want material-wise... or they'll be almost what I want, with one set of squares different. ARGH! Maybe one day I'll try this too. Very cool though, thanks for sharing!! :)

ok i'll look at joann an see if i can find a book and then use the machine. so much better than desperately searching stores for the perfect shade of purple to go in my new green bedroom...:innocent:

I just started learning to quilt, and I must say I love love love it! I don't think I'm doing it right though, lol. I just bought a bunch of 4" squares made for quilting off of ebay. I then sewed them together to make larger squares. Each large square has a small decorative square in the middle, and then I swered them all together. It took me 2 weeks to make 2 Large squares! I think I need 2 more large squares, and then I need the backside right and the quil batting? Once it's all sewed together I planned to sew a border of lace or something around it.

I have many sewing projects around here.

I love making clothing also. I especially like machine embroidery. My daughter has so many girly things i've made her that she refuses to wear, lol. My biggest talent though is making dance costumes.

My granny used to quilt by and with my 7 aunts (yes 7 aunts - the 5 boys played outside = 12 kids!!). She also used to knit and crochet. She made baby blankets and wedding throws for all 36 (at the time) grandchildren before she passed away.

I have really eccentric tastes when it comes to decorating my house, so I can never find the right fabric colors for duvet covers, blankets, etc. I need a hobby, something to keep me busy and out of the refridgerator while hubby's away.

I really have no idea how to sew at all. My mom helps me with everything I do now. BUT, I'd love to learn!!

What's a good beginners machine (and other equipment) for making quilts and other things like clothes, etc.???

I live between Statesville and Salisbury, so pretty close actually!!

I'm a visual learner, so I need visual instruction - reading something of a piece of paper just doesn't cut it for things like this.

I would love a good teacher!:eyes:

PM me and maybe we can get together and quilt! OHHHH, I'm so excited!
