More illegal alien drunk drivers I’m not supposed to mention
By Michelle Malkin • November 27, 2007 12:02 PM
(L) Illegal alien drunk driver Juan Manuel Juarez Reyes, Boone, NC, accused of killing a man in a Thanksgiving holiday crash; (R) Jacklin Munguia-Herrera, 5, killed by an illegal alien drunk driving suspect over the Thanksgiving holiday in Oakland, CA

Last week, an illegal alien in the desert rescued a boy who was stranded after his mother died in a car crash. Yes, it was a touching story. No, it doesn’t mean we should hand over citizenship to every illegal alien who does a good deed. Left-wing e-mailers touted the open-borders AP story, demanding that I cover it and accusing me of being a heartless racist.

But why should I cover it? Open-borders sympathizers dominate the MSM. The AP story was carried far and wide. I cover stories that provide counterbalance–stories that do not fit the shamnesty-promoting narrative of the AP, Washington Post, New York Times, LA Times, etc., etc., etc. Hysterical opponents interpret my emphasis on the negative public safety and national security consequences of lax immigration enforcment as some sort of blanket indictment of all illegal aliens. No. It’s an indictment of immigration enforcement officials at all levels of government who refuse to do their jobs and Washington politicians who let them get away with it for fear of crossing Big Business and the multiculti mob.

Here’s a new story of an illegal alien drunk driver in Boone, NC, that I’m not supposed to mention:

An illegal immigrant is accused of driving drunk in Boone over the Thanksgiving holiday and plowing into a sport utility vehicle, killing a man inside.

Boone police said Juan Manuel Juarez Reyes slammed into the rear of a Lexus SUV that was about to turn from Highway 105 onto Poplar Hill Drive shortly before 11 p.m. Friday. The SUV was skidded 250 feet, hitting a Watauga County deputy’s patrol car. The occupants of the SUV were trapped inside their vehicle but the deputy was not hurt.

The driver, Sallie Ellis Newell, and passenger Jacqueline Elizabeth Newell were taken to the Watauga County Medical Center where they were treated in released. But Brian Alan Newell and Andrew Russell Newell, who was in the back passenger-side seat, were flown to Johnson City Regional Medical Center.

Andrew Newell, 22, died at the hospital. His father remains in critical condition.

Family members said the Newells were returning from a Thanksgiving trip to South Carolina and were only a quarter-mile from home.

Authorities said Monday that Juarez Reyes was caught in the country by Border Patrol agents in 2002 and was sent back to Mexico. They aren’t sure when he re-entered the United States.

Police say he was speeding and drunk when the crash happened.
And here’s another from Oakland, Calif.:

An Oakland man charged Monday with murdering two children in a Thanksgiving night hit-and-run crash told his 17-year-old nephew moments before impact that he didn’t care if he or the teenager died as a result of his speeding, a prosecutor said.

Carmelo Salas, 28, was charged with murder in the deaths of Stephanie Cervantez, 14, and her 4-year-old cousin, Jacklin Munguia-Herrera, for allegedly running a stop sign in East Oakland and crashing his Ford Expedition sport utility vehicle into a Ford Mustang carrying the victims about 7:20 p.m. Thursday.

Salas fled after the crash at 89th Avenue and D Street but was arrested early the next morning, police said.

He was charged with murder under the theory of implied malice, which is defined as engaging in an unlawful act done in “conscious disregard” of the risk to human life, prosecutor Norbert Chu said.

Salas told his nephew, who was in the SUV with him, that he wasn’t afraid to die and that he would take his nephew with him, Chu said. Salas was going as fast as 80 mph in a 25-mph zone, and the nephew warned him seconds before impact that the Mustang was approaching, the prosecutor said…

…Salas is also the subject of a hold by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement because he is in the United States illegally from Mexico, authorities said.
But, hey, I’m just a heartless racist who deserves to be spat on.

Hmmm....
The U.S. has the highest incarceration rate of any country.

There are currently almost 2 million people incarcerated in the U.S.

Although the nation's crime rate has dropped 30%, the prison population has tripled, with 84% of newcomers being nonviolent offenders.

Last year, Wall St. executives made over $4 billion in profit from the prison industry.

Number imprisoned in the U.S. per 100,000 residents, by gender and race (1997 study)
White Female: 32
White Male: 491
Black Female: 192
Black Male: 3,253

In 1995, 1 out of every 3 Black men aged 20-29 were under 'justice system' control on an average day.

78% of women in prison have endured the trauma of childhood physical or sexual abuse.

75% of incarcerated women are mothers.

A larger percentage of the mentally ill are in prison than in mental health facilities.

70% of all inmates are illiterate.

Just Because You Make A Mistake Does Not Make You A Criminal. I Dont Justify Putting Another Person In Danger But Many Illegal Immigrants Who Have Made A Mistake Just Like Anyone Else In Our Society Should Be Granted The Opportunity To Pay For There Mistakes And Learn From Them. They use the statistic over and over about how many "illegals" are in the Federal Prisons. They use that to scare people in this country to make them think that "illegals" are committing these horrible federal crimes. What they DON'T tell is that Immigration facilities/jails/holding centers are considered FEDERAL PRISONS. This considered, then obviously the percentage of "illegals" in Federal prisons will be high. Oh I could go on and on about this...I'm a cop, I see who goes to jail in my county EVERY DAY! We have a fairly good sized Hispanic population here, and trust me, they are not the ones filling our jail! Most of the time, not always, but most of the time....they go to jail for "no Driver's License" and other very minor offenses that folks of any other race would NOT go to jail for. I can say this with all honesty because as a part of the system, I see it...I work in it. Thank goodness I have a small role in training new recruits and I drill it into their poor heads... everybody that you deal with is a PERSON. If you can't talk to them, call someone who can. Not understanding English is not a criminal offense (at least not yet :( )

And it isn't "illegals" in federal prisons, because the undocumented do *not* have a separate category to track their percentages. The federal government says "non-citizens" (meaning also legal immigrants, or whomever is not a citizen of the United States too). Lou Dobbs and other anti-immigrants have been taking to task as to why they always attribute that percentage to "illegal immigrants".

I work in the largest penal colony in the world and I would absolutely dispute the statistic that 70% of the inmate population is illiterate.

Also, let's be clear here, ladies (and gentleman)... this article was talking about MURDER....not DUIs. The two recent examples that she gave were of Mexican men, who were at one time in the custody of US officials and went on to commit vehicular HOMICIDE while under the influence. This could have been any one of the men here who have DUIs. Let's keep it in perspective. Each and every DUI is breaking the law, as is the illegal entry of most of us (or our spouses). We all hope to 'make it right' as far as legal immigration status. But do any of us exuse the breaking of laws whether by someone here illegally or otherwise? I hope that the answer is NO.

I absolutely do not excuse the breaking of laws and I don't think anyone here does. Headlines sells papers and let's face it a U.S. Citizen being arrested for DUI or even vehicular manslaughter very rarely makes the headlines. Maybe we should all get together and find a way to make our own news station and report on EVERYTHING and ANYTHING that concerns U.S. Citizens, legal permanent residents and EWI's alike. Let's face it, the views of the american public come from what they see on the Nightly News or read in the newspaper. They base their opinions on that and that alone. There is a small percentage of those that are willing to research every aspect of a situation and form an unbiased opinion. If I was at the end of our process and my husband was legally here in the U.S. I would absolutely be out on the street talking to anyone I could, writing to the newspapers and doing my part to get the word out but since my family comes first and our unity is number one I must put my voice on the backburner and turn the other cheek when I here how the illegals are the reason for the dysfunction in our society. Trust me though, that once my process is finished and I no longer have to hide and live in fear that I will make my voice heard.

Where else would illegal aliens/immigrants be then in Federal prison. There was a study of 55,000 illegal immigrants in the penal system ( Federal, state and local ) done by the GAO, here are the results of that study:

Results:

The briefing slides in enclosure I address each of our three questions.
In summary, for our study population of 55,322 illegal aliens, we found
that:

* They were arrested at least a total of 459,614 times, averaging about
8 arrests per illegal alien. Nearly all had more than 1 arrest. Thirty-
eight percent (about 21,000) had between 2 and 5 arrests, 32 percent
(about 18,000) had between 6 and 10 arrests, and 26 percent (about
15,000) had 11 or more arrests. Most of the arrests occurred after
1990.

* They were arrested for a total of about 700,000 criminal offenses,
averaging about 13 offenses per illegal alien. One arrest incident may
include multiple offenses, a fact that explains why there are nearly
one and half times more offenses than arrests.[Footnote 6] Almost all
of these illegal aliens were arrested for more than 1 offense. Slightly
more than half of the 55,322 illegal aliens had between 2 and 10
offenses. About 45 percent of all offenses were drug or immigration
offenses. About 15 percent were property-related offenses such as
burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and property damage.
About 12 percent were for violent offenses such as murder, robbery,
assault, and sex-related crimes. The balance was for such other
offenses as traffic violations, including driving under the influence;
fraud--including forgery and counterfeiting; weapons violations; and
obstruction of justice.

* Eighty percent of all arrests occurred in three states--California,
Texas, and Arizona. Specifically, about 58 percent of all arrests
occurred in California, 14 percent in Texas, and 8 percent in Arizona.

There are currently an estimated 300,000 illegal immigrants in state, local and Federal prisons. Slightly higher than the general USC/PR population.

Well stated! There are plenty of articles about vehicular homicides involving citizens and legal immigrants alike, just look at the news. It makes even bigger headlines if the driver is unlicensed or driving with a suspended license which is simillar to those involving illegal aliens. As for celebrities, there are Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie, Brittney Spears, Linsey Lohan, Mike Tyson, James Brown, and the guy from Prison Break, etc. For the exception of the Prison Break guy, no one was killed but their illegal behavior was given more air time than the Iraq and Afghanistan war.

...There are currently an estimated 300,000 illegal immigrants in state, local and Federal prisons. Slightly higher than the general USC/PR population [per capita]...

This particular paragraph was unbolded, leading me to believe it wasn't in the GAO report (especially saying that there is a higher illegal immigrant population in all prisons nationwide than that of USC/PR). When I've heard the numbers from credible sources before, *all* immigrants (legal and illegal) are shown to have half of the predilection for crime (which does not include *civil* violations, such as immigration law) as U.S. citizens. Just in the numbers you have brought up, roughly 45% of that estimated 300,000 is "drug and immigration" (an "illegal immigrant" by the very nature of the definition is guilty of a civil immigration violation; It would be a rare thing indeed to have a USC guilty of an "immigration" offense in prison) offenses, giving 135,000 in those categories alone.

The percentage of illegal aliens vs illegal aliens in prison is slightly higher than the general public. By virtue of the the crime, illegal aliens with "just" a immigration violation are in Federal prisons. The majority of the estimated 300,000 illegal alien prisoners are in state and local prisons. A study of 55,000 cases out of 300,000 is not a trivial sample.

The estimated 300,000 illegal aliens in the prison system are in there because of non-immigration related crimes.

I agree that race should not be a consideration, however,

please do not trivialize drunken driving by any person...this is not a crime where the victim has ANY fault, or a second chance. People die from this and once someone has been drinking they no longer deserve the chance to gauge their own ability to drive. The are risking the lives of others not just themselves and NO ONE has the right to risk other people's lives.

Andi

It's against the law, drinking and driving, no matter the race, or creed. It is killing people, and people are tired of that. For the most part, it doesn't matter if they are Americans, or legal or illegal immigrants. You drink and drive, you must pay. Funny people quit looking at the real offender here...Alcohol. not to be a Carrie Nation or anything, but c'mon that is where this problem starts.

I agree with you...if you drink and drive you should pay for it, no matter who you are and if you are a citizen or not.

I get so mad when the media report on the bad things undocumented immigrants do. I mean, I know we are not perfect but what about reporting or making a big deal about the good things. No, that will never happen. Why? Because they will never tell the truth that we are not monsters who want to take over the country.
