I have a possum named Mario living under my house. I also have these ol' yard chickens someone gave me. They roost in my tree at night. One time I looked up there and Mario was sitting up there in a neat little line with the chickens. I wish I had a picture of that.
We have all manner of wildlife here. I include my uncivilized nieghbors in that catagory.

oh my gosh, kenaly, you have a LOT of pets. When you said you had 16, I thought, "Oh they must have a lot of small pets," like hamsters and birds or something...and then I kept scrolling down the page and seeing all those adorable dogs and cats and at the end I was like, Wow they must have a *huge* house!!! I don't know how you do it!!
My little kitty Lily is staying with my mom and her three cats now. (I'm trying to upload a photo, but I'm having a brain block right now or something because I can't find the upload button in photobucket! And this is not my first time using it. :confused1: So when I figure out what I'm doing wrong, I will post a picture. )
I miss her a lot down in Mexico, but I've semi-adopted a cat down there, Manchas. That eases the pain a little! :)
Oh, and I guess these guys are sort've like pets: our chickens in Mexico. Two of the hens just had babies last week, so now we have 25 chickens! Yikes!

This little squirt I got on Craigs List for $25 bucks. She is 4 1/2 months.
And as it turns out, she is a purebred bluepoint siamese.
I named her Thaila. (like Thailand)
After Thailands original name of Siam.
9
She has very large pupils that are circular like a human eye. It's so cool in dim lite.
10
Then, I have my $600 purebred Maine Coon Wanderlei, that I have a pic in my sig, of course. He was a birthday present from my husband this year.
He is 7 months.
11
12
And I just got these 3 birds.

I stay VERRRYYYY busy! We have almost 2 acres fenced, so my big dogs have lots of play space, the little dogs only go out for walks, and the cats never go out. Every night, the little dogs sleep on our bed, the other dogs have beds in our room, and the cats are also in our room..gets rather crowded!:bounce:

This makes me sad because my baby went missing and I haven't found her. It has been about 1 month. She always hung out outside and the neighbors kids would pet her. She started to go on their porch and is now gone. I am suspicious of them and really think they may have her inside or given her to someone. She NEVER went away from us. I contacted the animal shelter and they have traps set in the area and haven't gotten any and they haven't had any dead animal calls with her description (they have her photo). I really feel depressed over it and it makes it even worse when I see all these precious babies. I miss my Lucy!!!!!!

Oh I just brought my husbands boxer home. He is such a mild mannered dog. I have him outside but have been very worried because it is warmer down in Orizaba and has been very cold here the past few days. He has a dog house. I put it right next to the house to cut the wind and gave him a few blankets. I have never had an animal in the house but I feel so guilty leaving him outside.
If I let him in at night and put him out in the day when we are not home would that make him sick. I wondered if the temperature change would affect him. I am not animal person but what do you all think.
lexidoodle
11-29-2007, 06:38 PM
Nepthys, this is what I would do. I would definitely bring him in at night, you could always confine him to 1 or 2 rooms until you see exactly how he behaves. I am always dissapointed when people get dogs and then just leave them outside 24/7. They need human contact, love and affection like we all do. Don't be surprised if having this dog doesn't make you feel better when you are a little down or not in a very good mood.
He will adjust just fine to the weather.

Why not crate train? Dogs like to have a little "den" of their own and a crate is a wonderful tool to assist with housetraining and gives a place for the dog to feel safe. I did this with all 11 dogs and it is a lifesaver!

kenely, I agree. We crate trained Andy, I have never had a dog who was potty trained so fast! I always thought it was a cruel thing to do, but I will do this with my future dogs.
Marie
11-29-2007, 07:44 PM
both of the dogs love their crate. They go in there on their own when they want to get away or have alone time. When i'm up really late, Teegan stays with me but then he gets up and goes in his crate. He does this during the day too, he'll go take a nap in there.

I love animals, animals are my life. Soon I will open a Pet Hotel, none of my pet guests will ever see a cage in my place. I know so many people, who do not want to go in vacation because of their animals. They do not want to put them in a kennel. I had to do it ones, never ever again. Thank God I only had to leave my dogs in the kennel for 2 days and 2 nights.
I only have rescues....except my ****atoo I got him when he was 4 month old. He is like a 2 year old child. He is a handful.

Tweedy, our ****atiel, I found him in my back yard 2004. He escaped from my house 2 times. I got him back each time. I never gave up searching for him. Last time he flew away in May of last year, someone found him but didn't want to give him back. I had to call the police, the officer was very nice and helped me by talking to the person who found him. His wings are clipped now, now more escaping from my house.

I brought him in after we got home from school. He played with the boys all evening and then I put him back outside for bed. I know he is not house broken and I would hate to get up to a big mess in the morning. My husband said to put tie him up in the door way and put his bed there and he will not go potty inside. He is out side tonight but the boys have said how mean I am because they want Chato in the house. He did stay in for about four hours and did not make a mess.
Thanks

When I was a kid I had an aunt with a horse farm. She gave it up years ago, and I haven't had the opportunity to ride a horse since! I miss it!

I miss horseback riding too. The village I grew up in was full of fisherman and tomboys with horses. We all had horses, I had a stud, two ponies and a quarter horse/palomino. I really miss it but we've since moved from there and the town expanded and now it's just not the same.

Yeah, if I didn't have the horse to keep me busy along with our daughter while my husband was gone, I think I would have gone crazy! It really kept my mind off other things! In the future when we have our own place we plan on making a part time business out of breeding and training quarter horses. Only time will tell though....

Okay, Marie since you have bird experience. I have been doing research on parrots (African Grey) and I want to see what you think about them. Are they difficult to care for? I have wanted a large bird for years and my husband finally broke down and said he would get me one!!! Now, I am kind of freaking out because some of the people I have spoken to say they are a handful to take care of.
Marie
12-04-2007, 02:10 PM
They are a handful. All birds take a lot of time but African Greys are like a 2 year old always needing your attention. They are very very social and unless you can give them time to be around them, don't get one. Everyone I know who has one loves them though.
There are several people on the ****atiel forum I lurk at who own an African Grey, you can post (no need to register) and ask them the pros and cons of owning an african grey:

Marie, You are soooo right. I have a ****atoo. If I would have known before, what I was getting myself into, I would have gotten another dog or two. These kind of birds can be very emotional, demanding and very loud.
If I leave my office, my ****atoo is calling me momma, momma, until I come back into the room. He doesn't like my husband. He bonded first with him, but after a year or so, he started bonding with me. Now he hates my husband. He doesn't mind my daughter thank God. The first 6 years are very difficult. They go through stages. Sometimes these kind of birds even bite and let me tell you, it hurts. My lucky bit me a few times, two times, I thought I have to go to the emergency room.
He is turning 6 years on December 14 and I got him with the age of 4 month.
I think we are out of the teenager stage. Now, he is a very loving and affectioned bird. The last time he bit me is about a year ago. It is very important to learn their body language. I didn't know and let me tell ya, I've learned the hard way.
That's the reason, why most of the people who get a bird like that, give them up because they can't handle them. These kind of birds are very attached to their owner and if you give them up because you can't handle them, they have to suffer. It isn't easy to raise these kind of birds. Also keep in mind, this will be a life time commitment, these kind of birds can live up to 85 years or even older.
I also have a ****atiel and Parakeet, they are much easier to handle than the big ones.

I be more than happy to answer some of your questions you may have, if you still want to get a exotic bird.
Don't get me wrong, it is not all negative about these kind of birds. They can be very loving, cuddly and a lot of fun. I love my babies.

I forgot something very important. The monthly cost of these kind of birds is between $100 and $150 dollars, for food and toys. They need a lot of toys to keep them busy. Fresh fruits and vegetable on a daily basis. Also, avian vets are very expensive too. To get some blood work done, if he/she gets sick, you are looking at, $300 and $500 dollars including office visit. For my ****atiel or parakeets, I pay around $100 and $150 per visit.

Thank you guys so much. I think I am going to wait. Maybe when my kids are out of the house and we have finished re-doing our home and we are settled old people with no kids then we can get one. I just love them. My aunt had one when I was growing up and I used to carry him everyone. I really got attached. But, I didn't have to tend to him on a daily basis so I just remember the fun stuff.
Thank you guys again for the info. I think my husband will be very happy to know how much money you all just saved him. Maybe he won't complain and ask me why I am on that website AGAIN!!!!! :bounce:
Marie
12-04-2007, 06:12 PM
Edit: you had already posted after i posted this. hehehe
You do need a certified avian vet if you have a bird. Make sure you find one that will do blood work and gram stains for bacteria. The one i went too looked at the bird and went "yeah he's healthy" and he is a renowned certified avian vet. Well I could have just LOOKED and said that. Birds hide their sicknesses very very well. If they look sick, they are very sick.
All birds are prone to plucking their feathers if they are not happy. This can be a problem for the big birds.
Keep in mind that the big birds live a long long time. It will be a life long commitment. ****atiels live about 20 years. Macaws and greys, a LOT longer, 50-70 years or more.
If you have never had a bird, a ****atiel makes a great bird. They are docile (generally, I have a few biters but mine are all rescues except Coconut) and love to cuddle. Same needs apply, seed, fresh veggies (some foods are toxic so you need to get that list before feeding) daily and toys.
Here are my 2 biggest love bugs. I have a soft spot for these 2. I have one more cuddler but he also bites on occasion. These 2 don't bite me. Coconut I got when she was 7 weeks and Dixie I got from a college student who didn't have the time (she loved him though).

I just don't know what it is I love about birds so much. But, seeing the pics I just want to run out and get one and then I have to really make sure that it is something I can handle. I hate it when people get animals and then give them up because of inconvenience so I know that it will be a lifelong deal. I just have to keep my head on straight and wait for now. But, I guess when the time comes a ****atiel may be a good place for me to start.

I agree, I hate it, when people get animals and then give them up because of inconvenience. There are so many birds out there without a loving home. It is very sad.
Yes, a ****atiel is a cute bird and they can get very tame, loving, cuddly birds. Look at Marie's pictures how affectioned they are.
I love my Tweedy. I found him 2004 in my back yard. It took a little while for him to adjust. I've tried everything possible to find his owner but I wasn't successful. For sure someone misses him. He is a loving bird. More important is, he has a save home and is loved.

I wish I could take pictures of one house owner that I work for. He puts his birds with many different colors on that thingy that looks like a green house. He has like 50 birds more or less. My favorite one was the talking white bird and she calls everybody "Baby.".....sigh....but I could get fired.

JustMe: I have 3 birds that are love bugs. The other 3 tiels don't want me to handle them and I don't force them. One of them hates me but likes my husband. The other one hates everyone (I've had him the longest too) and the last one is just reclusive. If i have to get him out like for wing clipping, he will sit there and let me scritch him but he won't come to me willingly.
My love bird is onery and a work in progress...lol
2 of them I got from an elderly lady, 2 from petfinder, 1 from a college student and then 1 from a breeder.
If there aren't any tiels available on petfinder in your area when you get ready to look, try to go on craigslist or try also local breeders. They are usually cheaper, healthier and more tame than the ones you find in the petstores.
The prices on tiels depends on the area and the mutation.
They are messy, dusty birds and you have to take care of them daily..it's a chore.

Marie: Isn't that funny. My ****atiel doesn't like anyone else either. If my husband comes into my office and Tweedy is out of his cage, he tries to attack him, the same with my daughter. The only person who can handle him except me, is my mom. She visits ones a year, he loves her....that's about it, no one else can get close to him.
What I hate is, when he sits on my shoulder and tries to pull my little facial hair. That hurts. :ah:

This is our new baby. His name is Rusty. He is a red Dobe. I have wanted one for years and the right boy came along so I got him. His owner had trained him and she lost her house and was going to get evicted from her apartment if she didn't find him another home (he is 110 lbs). She was going to take him to the shelter. I am so glad that I found him. He does however sound like a horse running through the house. :bounce: And, with our other baby Precious (malte-poo) he plays wonderfully but he makes me nervous every once in a while because he puts almost her whole body in his mouth and all you see is her head. I just freak out because with one bite down it is over. lol But, he is just soooooo sweet. He sits, lays down, if you say bedtime he gets on his bed (2 blankets/pillow), he is potty trained, he sits and waits for you to go out of the door and then you have to tell him to come and he will come. I have never seen a more obedient dog. His previous owner did a wonderful job. And, the only toy he doesn't demolish in one night is a basketball and he kicks it behind himself and then runs after it. Okay, okay I am writing a small novel but I am just so happy to have him. He is wonderful.

Hey everyone!
This is a pic of my canary, Bumblebee. The name is preety obvious, he's yellow and black but besides that since he was born, he's always been real brave and not afraid of anything. A few weeks after he was born, he still didn't have a tail or many of the "butt" feathers (they were all baby fuzzy feathers) and he was already out of the nest and perched on a swing even though he was still a baby!
