So, this thread has nothing to do with immigration, but I have nowhere else to vent, so I figured you guys wouldn't mind if I let it out here. Ok, for those of you who don't know, I work for a Motel in Florida. I really enjoy working here... I love the interaction I get with all the different types of people that stay here. BUT the owner and the manager make my time here miserable.
I have been working here for a while. Ever since I came, the owner, has been treating me like a 5 year old. I don't know if it's part of his culture to talk down to women, but he talks down to me all the time, and treats me like I'm stupid and don't know anything. If anything, I'm the only one that works here that knows what's going on.
And he can be so cruel... one day he asked me a question that I didn't know the answer to, and I made the mistake of saying "I don't know". He snapped at me "DONT SAY THAT! It's the worst answer you can give someone! Typical American." Maybe he's right about it not being the best answer to give, but geez... did I deserve that?
A lot of times my manager will schedule me to work until 11pm and then the next day have me here at 7am, so he can sleep in and stroll in around 8:30/9:00. So it was like 7:15am, and I'm not awake yet.. he calls "Why do you sound so tired???" I said "I was here until 11:00 last night. I'm tired" He says "What do you want to go home???" I said "No, I don't want to go home." He says "THEN WAKE UP. If you're gonna be there you need to wake up. Go home if you can't." I should have just been like "Fine, I will." But of course I didn't.
But yeah, everyone is supposed to get a raise after 3 months. I have gotten NOTHING and the other girl who works nights when I don't, never works mornings, never does any filing, never cleans, and gives everyone an attitude gets a raise. HOW did she get one??! I just don't get it.
Well anyway... this week I'm house-sitting pretty far from my job and one night this week I have to be here late and then be back early again... which is an extra pain this week because I'm staying so far. I asked him today when I got here if he could switch it and all he could say was NO. He wouldn't give me a reason why, it was just flat out NO. Whatever. I don't care... but what makes me angry about him... is the fact that when he came here (after I came) he had never worked for a m(h)otel before and I TRAINED HIM. He STILL asks me how to do stuff. It's just not fair.
I NEED to find a better paying job... one where the management RESPECTS its employees. GRRR TO THE MANAGEMENT HERE!!!

I'm am sorry to hear that. Some people are just scum! You should try to seek out better opportunities for yourself. It sucks to start out new at another job, but sometimes it has to be done just for sanity's sake. Once they lose you as an employee then they will (hopefully) realised what they had. I hope the best for you :).

Sorry to hear that you work for a grouch, who apparently has not attended Harrassment Training. It wouldn't take a hot second to find another job, perhaps in a different hotel, motel or elsewhere. I'd get my resume together if I were you and scram. Your hard work, knowledge and reliability are only serving others.

you know, i don't know anything wrong with saying I don't know. I'd rather someone say "i don't know" than bs me around.
I hope you find a better job soon!!

EXACTLY what I was thinking... I thought.. so what, do you want me to lie and make something up as opposed to saying I don't know???! I can't win with this guy... I def need to find a new job!
Thanks for the hugs and support everyone!! <3

Kiki, I'm sorry to hear about your crappy boss. it's really unfortunate that bosses have so much power to make a job so crappy!!!
The one thing that stood out to me is the not getting a raise thing. In my opinion you should go into his office and ask for your raise. Point out your strengths to him and how important you feel you are to the company. You deserve it, since you have to put up with his CRAP!

It is hard to work for tyranical bosses... I would honestly have to look for another job if I had a boss as bad as yours.

KIKIGURL, you sound very smart why not explore other opportunities, I went through alot of crappy jobs myself, but in the end I found what I like, best hours 8:00 to 5:00 Mon-Fri, best boss ever respects me knows what I'm worth, best pay ever ,in other words, you actually learn from those crappy jobs( to value yourself ). Keep searching , God Bless You!

hey Kikigurl1! Hope you were able to have a great birthday! Happy Belated B-day!
As far as the work situation, I used to have a boss that didn't like hearing "I don't know" also and instead we were supposed to say "I'll find out for you" or something 'pro-active', along those lines.
Your boss is just cranky and I hate that he is taking it out on you. Just shrug it off and do what you do best. Don't let it get to you because that's exactly what he wants- he wants it to get to you.

You really should not be taking any of this crap from this guy. He is not allowed to treat you this way. If you keep allowing it, it will continue to happen. You need to stand up for yourself and put him in his place. Does this motel have someone above him you can go to? If he is upper management, he should not be going to you for training, he should be in a position to train people. I suggest you find yourself another job in the same field as you already have more experience than most. You can probably even be a manager since you are probably doing his work there too! Don't let him step all over you! Once you leave, they will realize what they lost and kick themselves in the A$& for it!!!

I was going through a similar situation a couple of months ago. My boss was a workaholic and expected me to work extra hours with no pay. I took it for about a year because I was scared I wouldn't find a better job until one day that I went into his office. I asked him for a raise, he said no, so then I told him to consider that my two week notice. I quit without having another job lined up. Two days later a friend told me about an awesome organization, I applied and that same day I was called and scheduled for an interview. A week after I had given my two week notice, I was hired at the other place. I am so glad I took that step of faith! It worked out for the best! Now I'm very happy and my new boss treats me like a queen. Sometimes in order to gain something we have to take a step of faith! Good luck with this situation.

I've been looking into some other hotels, but it's really hard right now, because it's off season here in Florida... so far nobody's hiring. :shy:

Even if he agreed to give me a raise, he'd end up screwing me over some how. There's another man that works here and demanded a raise.. he agreed, and it's been 2 months and it's still not on his paychecks.
KIKIGURL, you sound very smart why not explore other opportunities Keep searching , God Bless You!
First of all thank you :) I think I'm pretty start too.. I'm thinking about looking into working for a bank, an insurance company, or something of the like. Something different, but also something that will pay me more, I'll get benefits, and I'll have set hours. None of this working until 11pm and being back the next morning at 7am!

Thanks for the b-day wishes... my b-day was actually pretty sad-ish too. My family didn't make it very happy for me. But that's another story! About my boss... it's so funny because when he says something mean to me and I'm completely nice to him.. you can tell it throws him off. Pretty hilarious.

The one who treats me like pure poop is the owner, in his case I'd have to take it to corporate, because other than them, there's no one above him. The guy I trained just now became the manager by default because our other awesome manager quit because he was tired of the owner's crap too. But if I quit, they'd seriously be upset, because this guy can't do ANYTHING without asking me a question. One day.. on a really busy weekend.. I want to wear a shirt underneath the uniform.. and when they tell me "Print this off.. do this.. do that.. hand me that piece of paper (thats RIGHT NEXT TO THEM)" I just want to stand up.. take the shirt off and be like "Do it yourself! I'm done!" Haha.. then like you said, they'd be kicking themselves, because it takes this guy 10 minutes to check 1 person in!

This guy won't LET me work extra hours because he REFUSES to pay over time.. which isn't that illegal? When the other manager worked here.. there was one pay period where I had FIFTEEN minutes of overtime.. he snapped at him "Why does she have over time??!" Then manager responds "Hey, it's 15 minutes" he responds "WHY does she have OVERTIME?!!" response: "I had her stay a little later one day because of such and such" Can you believe that? I can't even get a full 40 hours. They schedule me at 39 in case I have to be here longer.. that way I won't have a SECOND of overstime! But congrats on your new job! It must feel great! One day I'll be able to say the same!

Since you're in off-season, maybe look into another line of work...even for a temp agency. Sounds like working fast food would even be better than where you're at. Put your resume on http://www.monster.com/

I actually worked for a fast-food restaurant before I started working here... the hourly pay was a $1.50 more, but they would only give me 20-25 hours, which definitely is NOT enough. But I'm definitely looking for something else, because I'm tired of this and I'm really struggling monetarily. :(

For now yes. I've been slacking on looking for another job, but I realllly need to get something else because I'm struggling money-wise. :( It stinks cause I can't even afford anything for Christmas this year.
Isn't this the same place where you got robbed? Didn't read this thread until now-you need to move on. There's so much better for you!

Glad to see you on here again, Kiki...it's been a while... Sorry to hear you're still dealing with the boss from H#!! You can SO do better than that! Get off your indecisive butt and get out there!!! (meant in the most loving way possible, of course!!!) I would be scared to set foot in that place after the robbery, and with all that you deal with there, enough is enough! I wish you the best of luck.

You should go to the website of big chains. Like Hilton, Marriott, Sheraton. They will list their own jobs that they have available. I know it is slow season I use to work for Hilton, but just try and most the hotels will keep you application on file for 6 months to a year.
