Thanks to my wonderful state government, 24,000 state workers are furloughed until they can agree on a budget. Augh...it's scary. They just won't work together and come to a compromise, so here I sit. No job, no pay. They have deemed me and my other co-workers as "unessential" so the state park I work at is closed. The campers had to pack up and leave. The ones that came from North Carolina were NOT happy. No one can swim. No one can hike. No one can even put their kayaks in the lake and paddle around. But the casinos are open. They are essential. Hmmm...

That is horrible!! Sad that something so important is so unimportant to the state... What a shame. Hopefully they'll figure something out soon and you can start working again!!
I just came into work the other day to find out the reservations center where I work is being shut down on Sept 1st! Perfect timing, I'm going on unpaid maternity leave with the new baby that's due Aug 7th, and Hector'll hopefully be home on July 20th if all goes well at the pick-up, and he'll be waiting to start a job until he get's his ss card... and then I have no job to go back to... wonderful... I think that if anyone can get through it though, we (everyone going through this lovely process) can!! I guess it keeps my options open...

that sucks epm525. It's all about money...casinos generate a lot more money than a park...
We used to have thefts here for drug money and now people are stealing to get money for gambling...and people are surprised....
hectorswife, i know you won't have trouble finding another job! Congrats on the baby!

That's awful! Hopefully, they will open their eyes to see that your job is essential! Good luck:)

That's awfull. Parks are one of the best things society has. The human spirit needs to be in nature every so often. They're just going to make things worse by closing parks. Do you get unemployment for this time?
On the bright side, though, how did you manage to land a job in a state park? I'd quit my job in a heartbeat if I could get a job working in a national or state park for the same (or more) money.

I just saw on the news that the State of Pennsylvania has decided to come to terms on their budget and things should be getting back to normal ? soon.

It's almost like every time you think you are getting one step ahead life knocks you one step back. But, usually in the end you come out stronger and things work themselves out.
I hope you have your job back now or soon. And I hope things get better for you too hectorswife.

Thanks everyone! We are back up and running. Thank God it was only one day. It is awesome to work here at the park, but yes, it really doesn't pay too much and I'm seasonal. BUT I just got a new job with the LCB (now I will be essential!) and I'm moving onward and upward!
State jobs are the easiest thing in the world to get (at least here in PA). You just take a Civil Service test and wait for the job notices to roll in...
