Representative Tom Tancredo of Colorado, a Republican presidential candidate whose fierce opposition to illegal immigration is the center of his campaign, contacted the immigration service yesterday demanding that agents raid a senator’s news conference.

The afternoon event on Capitol Hill was held by Senator Richard J. Durbin, Democrat of Illinois and the leading sponsor of a bill that would give legal status to illegal immigrants who are high school graduates, if they attend college or serve in the United States military for two years. The bill is scheduled to come up for an important procedural vote in the Senate this morning.

Mr. Tancredo announced yesterday morning that he had contacted Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the federal agency, calling for the arrest of illegal immigrants he said would attend the news conference.

“If we can’t enforce our laws inside the building where American laws are made, where can we enforce them?” Mr. Tancredo said in a statement.

Participating in the news conference were three immigrant students who would benefit if Mr. Durbin’s legislation passed; two were born in Germany, and one was from Costa Rica. All were in the United States on temporary legal status, said Joe Shoemaker, Mr. Durbin’s spokesman.

Mr. Shoemaker said the senator was surprised and offended by Mr. Tancredo’s effort.

“Congressman, have you no shame?” Mr. Durbin said in a statement, indirectly comparing Mr. Tancredo to Senator Joseph McCarthy and his anti-communist hearings in the 1950s.

A spokeswoman for the immigration agency, Kelly Nantel, confirmed that officials had received a letter from Mr. Tancredo and were reviewing it. She said the agency took no action yesterday.

Ewwww! That's a horrible human being. He doesn't even know if illegal immigrants are going to be there- just assumptions. And even if they are they have a right to protest too! You still have a right to freedom of speech even if you're not a citizen.

Well, one (the Costa Rican) assumably speaks Spanish (so ignore the real nationality to just say "mexican"), meeting the Minuteklan criteria to scream "illeagle". The other two are "lib symps" since they are helping that "illeagle", and they should be "deported acrossed the boarder to". "Senatar" Durbin is a "traiter" anyway, leastaways when compared to fine, upstanding leaders like Tancredo.

Uhhmm, sorry, [/sarcasm]...

Spelling *and* grammar, even while going on "thier" English-only rants...

For me to take someone seriously I have to feel they know what they are talking about...

And when I see an "Americans for Legal Immigration" site having users that aren't corrected when they repeat the misconception that every foreigner married to a U.S. citizen is automatically made a citizen by that marriage instantly, it makes me wonder even more...

At the same time they say they support the Constitution, but want to change it so that someone that is actually a citizen wouldn't be...

Believing that everything bad comes over a southern border, not over an easier border in the north over twice as long...

Does anyone know what "thier" stance is on words like taco, rodeo, Los Angeles, etc? Wonder if they'd like to ban Latin phrases too- like the one on the dollar bills. Just curious.

Dunno, but I see one snit in particular that denies all but recent Hispanic influence in *Las Vegas, Nevada*...

Maybe to get rid of the only current U.S. currency that has two non-citizens on it too...

But you are right, it is a foreign language on U.S. documents...
