Well, Jose is Torreon and Nextel is not cooperating! They have a huge office there and I am getting ready to call them soon as I purchase a calling card. We had planned to use the direct connect to avoid charges from Mx. It works out on the rancho but not in town. Any ideas?
Anyone else in that area?

My wife and stepchildren are also in Torreon (I'm going down in less than a week). Usually I call from the States using a calling card, but really didn't study low-cost ways of having calls from there back to the U.S. (we use MSNIM almost every night, with webcams). I have a Verizon phone that worked within the city on the high "roaming" charges before, and haven't tried it since being on the "America's Choice" package with supposably no roaming charges now (my phone costs are paid by my work).
I can say quite a bit about the travel to get there too...

Thanks! I have been having home PC issues and haven't gotten back to this post. We don't dare use the phone because the roaming charges are astronomical! We were hoping for direct connect so we could talk for free (well, $10/month). He got a phone down there but the calling cards are high and the minutes few. I plan to visit in a few soon.

I travel to Mexico many times due to my job. I use Sprint, but it is $.99 a minute

:whoa:that's expensive! Sprint is together with Nextel & he would probably have service if he had one of the hybrid phones. Thanks!

You should check into those cable phones. My friend can call canada for like $.10 a minute. I am not sure about Mexico.

Hadn't thought about that. I'll do some research. Thanks!

i used 1010987 for europe and i've never had any problems. They changed things where you need to verify you have a phone and stuff. It works with landlines and I've talked to my sister for hours for just a few dollars.

Tomorrow night is the start of my trip. For locally bought $5 calling cards, 'landline' to 'landline' we can get in upwards of an hour & a half talk time when things are optimal. Sometimes they run crappy however. We do calls on the weekend.
There is a displaced cost for chatting (we have the equivalent of DSL at each end, but she does live within the city), but with the video and audio a phone call can't beat it (and we transfer family and home pictures from digital sources easily too). He may only be able to get dial-up (with its own costs) outside the city. Almost every night (and on the weekends sometime) we are on MSNIM together.
That time, and the need for long distance communication, will come to a close very quickly (except for keeping in touch with my MIL). I hope to have everyone moved up within a week. We should PM (when I return) because I do like networking for the mutual help.

Hey I just saw this post and since we are on the subject, me and my fiance sent his family a computer directly from dell last year, however they have never used the internet on it because I guess they dont know how to get the internet or something. They said something about they have to buy access cards of 30 each? Anybody know anything about that? I was never able to find anything helpful online. They live in San Luis Potosi, San Luis Potosi.
