Hi, A friend of my husband's has asked me to helf his father in-law who is here with a work visa get his SS card for work. How does he do this? I looked at the USCIS website for an application but can't find one. Does anyone know? There should be a card he can get for work purposes only, right?

USCIS' site would not have applications for a social security card - they are completely separate entities.

This link should give him all he needs to know - as far as what documents to take with him as well as an application for a Social security card that he can download (PDF document at the top of the page). Essentially, he'll need to take proof of his identity (passport) and current immigration status (I'm not sure, but I assume work visas are placed in passports the same as family visas - in which case, his documentation for immigration status would also be in his passport).

Thanks. I found it on the Social Security website. I figured that USCIS would have some type of link for employment authorization forms and a socail security card would be included or at least the info would be there, but then I just looked at the SSA site and DUH!

Please clarify; does he need to apply for Work Authorization or does he already have Work Authorization?

If he's here on a work visa, I would think he doesn't need further work authorization. Unless I read the original post incorrectly.

And it would be logical for the USCIS to have social security info on the same page as work auth papers - but we're talking about the Federal Government here! LOL We can't get the FBI to talk to the CIA, so how can we expect USCIS to link to the SSA?
