I started a new Group on You Tube: http://youtube.com/group/immreform

I read over the You Tube rules for contests. They say its ok to run contests in the "groups" sections of You Tube and to give prizes. I've been kicking around the idea of a video contest for a few months. I think its time to dive in. We'll experiment with a first contest and see how it goes.

General Info on the Contest:
Prize: $250, awarded by me by money order in US dollars
Subject: The right to live with your spouse
Contest Deadline: Your entry must be posted by Friday, October 12, 2007 at 11:59 pm Central Standard Time.
Award Date: The winner will be announced on Monday, October 15, 2007 at noon Central Standard Time both here and on the Group page of You Tube
Free to enter

You must post your entry on the You Tube group page: http://youtube.com/group/immreform before the deadline.

You must follow all of the normal You Tube rules regarding posting videos on their site. For example, no profanity, no copyright infringement, no nudity, etc. Additionally, videos containing defamation will not be permitted. Videos deemed inappropriate will be disqualified at the discretion of the "Owner" of the You Tube group, i.e. me. Videos should be no more than ten minutes long.

The winner will be determined at my sole discretion. I cannot give the award to myself, any immediate family member, nor any employee of mine. Clients, however, are eligible.

The winning video will be the one that best educates the viewer on the legal and social issues involved and makes the most convincing argument that the law should be changed in favor of relief for the unlawfully present and their American families. Your target audience is the general You Tube viewers who may or may not have an opinion on immigration reform, but have a poor understand of the law and its impact on American families.

More about this week's subject:
Silverman v. Rogers, 437 F. 2d 102 (1st Cir. 1970) is in conflict with Moore v. City of East Cleveland, 431 US 494 (1977)(http://www.law.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/conlaw/moore.html). Residing with one's spouse is a right, not a privilege, that can only be taken away when there is a compelling state interest and only through Due Process of law. But immigration processes and procedures, especially procedures at the consulate are inadequate to follow due process and fail to recognize the right of the CITIZEN to live with his/her spouse.

Your video doesn't have to be quite so focused on these legal terms and cases, but should mention something about how its YOUR right as the US citizen to live with your spouse that is being denied.

Excellent idea (I got sick to my stomach about a week ago seeing many anti-immigration videos posted on YouTube )! One easy idea I will put out is a statement about the misconception that someone marrying a U.S. citizen is automatically made a U.S. citizen. And as a person not necessarily denied from living with my spouse and kids at the moment (but going through a confusing and lengthy process to gain that) I would be excluded from the contest by that constraint.

Anyone can enter. You yourself don't have to have been denied this right. If you can put together a good video that's both informative and moving, then do it! And there's no limit to the number of entries per person.

Hey I sent Independant Film Producer Michael Moore an email about this (really I did) and it's a super idea. I also posted the contest on my blog today (late I know) but any exposure is great.

I can't make good videos but I can't wait to see who can! Good luck :)

If any of you are waiting until a time when you have a "great" video to put up, you may be waiting forever since we all have lives and committments and it seems like advocacy is the thing that can always wait until tomorrow. We need to get videos up. There's so much restrictionist crap out there, our voices are being drowned out.
