My name is Laurie, and my husband Angel and I have been married for 6 years(on the 12th of this month). Angel came here illegally in Nov. of 1998. This is his first and only time coming to the US. We met and married in 2001. Before we met, he had some trouble with local law so since we got married we have tried very hard to stay below the radar. I have started several times to research what forms to fill out...but was always afraid that I would do something wrong and they would come for him. We have been unable to afford the services of a lawyer so this whole process seems overwhelming to me. He gets frustrated too, saying that it is only a dream. I could really use a push in the right direction and would welcome any correspondence. Thanks in advance.
Laurie

Welcome Laurie! Read the post Adriane suggested. There is all the help you need here. It will help immensely when you have a basic understanding of the process. Many of us have done it without a lawyer. Don't worry about that.

 Welcome! I too am new to this whole immigration thing. I have found numerous resources on this site...and I am starting to get the "ovaries" to start this process. I could relate how this process could be so overwhelming and frightening because we hear of all these cases gone wrong! The thread that was posted earlier is an excellent place to start with. Just post all the questions you have. Also, there are chat with Laurel Scott (I dont know when the next one is. Maybe this Wed.?).
You nade a mention of some problems with the police... could you elaborate on that? Was it DUI? Drugs? Arrested?
Once again welcome to I2US!

Thank you all for your quick replies! I have been so overwhelmed with this whole process. In answer to the question of my husband's police problems. My husband was in US about 2 yrs. Went to a friend's house after work(9pm). Everyone there drinking-he had about 1/2 a beer. They sent him to town to buy more beer. He wouldn't take his car cuz no plates so he drove another guy's. (one kid of 17 went with him).Got stopped in town (not clear why) and cops asking questions. He spoke VERY minimal english-please,thanks, ok....Cops asked where he worked and took him to boss' house. Boss said never problems with him, cops took him back to car (vehicle was unlocked and unguarded whole time). They called guy who owned car and he came to them. Cops asked to search vehicle and found grocery bag of ditch weed in trunk. Asked owner if was his and he said no, asked kid and again no, so cops said since my husband was driving it was his and took him to jail. The person it really belonged to had gotten it earlier in the day and "forgot" to tell anyone about it. My husband went to court and translator (we had to hire one) and court appt attry advised him to take a deal. (We live in a very small community and the chances of him getting a fair trial was zero to nothing-illegals had just started coming into our area and people's views were quite one-sided to say the least.Anyway, he took the deal and now has on his record intent to deliver- I think it is a felony, but low class one.He had to take a sub abuse course and he completed it. No problems since then with anything police related. Do you think this will be a problem for us?

Ouch!!! I will need to get back to you unless someone does it sooner...they had a thread re: what is accepted by USCIS as far as that stuff goes....
Keep all the docs you have re: case. Do you have a copy of the police report? Do you have the copies of the certificate or letter or him completing course?
Even though that was not him he was still finger printed and charged. When he does his biometrics that will come up. Also, in the forms they ask about problems with the law such as DUI and drugs, ect. So you will need to disclose, because they find everything out.
