View Full Version : DREAM Act?

I've been following some of the immigration blogs, and trying for the past few days to find some answer as to whether Sen. Durbin of Illinois was successful in getting the DREAM Act attached to the defense funding bill, or if there is any information/progress on that. When I search I can't come up with any news from the last few days, and then I just get a ton of super anti-immigrant garbage as well.
I also remember there was a new member on here a week or so ago that mentioned she was involved with dreamact.info - now I can't remember your name. If you are around, could you please send me a PM? I am interested in having a potential Dream Act beneficiary write something for my blog (http://laurafern.wordpress.com). It's not a huge blog, maybe 400-500 hits per week, but I think this is a great opportunity, and I want to take advantage of it if possible.
Thanks in advance!
It turns out they're not going to put it on the DoD bill, but Reid says they will bring it up before Nov. 16th

Here is a very good article. Looks like it has been postponed until next week

Thanks for the link to the story (http://www.dailybreeze.com/news/regstate/articles/10064276.html).
"Dianne Feinstein, a strong supporter of the bill, reported receiving 4,000 phone calls about the Dream Act since Sept. 13. Her spokesman Scott Gerber said 239 calls were in favor of the bill, and 3,805 opposed."
:bang: ... And this is the real tragedy. I don't see why anyone has any hope for immigration reform when something as relatively innocuous as the DREAM Act receives this sort of response from the anti-immigrant groups and only 239 people call in their support.
WOW!!!! I can't believe the proportions of people that called for and against the Dream Act!!!! That's really sad. These kids deserve this!!!!!!

According to this article:
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/politics/5168101.html
The Dream act is now on hold. Senator Reid has taken it off the docket due to the fact that republicans have vowed to not let it go to vote the same way that they stopped the last reform bill.
The anti-immigrants are very vocal about every bill. They label any change in the law as Amnesty. (Thank you Lou Dobbs, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannety and every other right wing nut looking to boost their ratings):curse:
Each one of these right wing hosts, encourage their uninformed and naive audiences to bombard politicians phone lines and emails every time the thought of any sort of reform is mentioned. They encourage people to post on internet blogs and forums as well. I'm surprised that I2US does not have more of them spamming this board.
Its unfortunate that these "leaders" find it so easy to spread hate. I just wish that they would stop spreading lies. I hope that some crafty lawyer finds a way to sue them for slander, misrepresentation, insighting racial incidents or something similar.

Of the 3,805 calls against, it was 238 xenos outside California calling an average of about 16 times apiece, masking that they were in her representative area...
She's a "strong supporter", so of course the xenos *focus* on calling her...
Anyone who believes this informal "poll" is a representation of her voting constituency, please raise your hand...

Oh no, I don't believe it's representative of her constituency at all, but if you read the whole article it is clear that many otherwise supportive people backed down because of the loud, well-organized attempts of the anti-immigrant groups.
I think the volume of calls on one side versus the other also has a lot to do with the fact that most of us who were calling in favor of the dream act were calling the people who were undecided or who had not stated their opinion, rather than the obvious nos and yeses (like Feinstein, who's a co sponsor).
I guess that's just a lesson for the next round, though.

One thing I do not understand.
Under the Dream Act if you had entered Without Documentation you would be eligible for In State Tuition rates.
But let's say you were a Native American, wanting to go to school in a different state, then you have to pay more.
Do you have to be anti-immigrant to question this?

Yes, but this is the way that it is for everyone. The native american could establish residence in the state which they will like to attend school for one year prior to going to school and pay in-state rates. However, presently any undocumented person must pay out of state tuition everywhere in the country. If they are accepted w/o a SS card.

That's a very shallow analysis.
Anyone who wants to go to school out of state has to pay out-of-state tuition. It doesn't matter if you are a Native American, a European American, or anything else. If you live in Wisconsin, you have to pay out-of-state tuition in New York.
The purpose of the DREAM Act is to make a college education attainable for deserving students who were brought here at no decision of their own, graduated from a U.S. high school and in many cases, know no other home than the U.S. It does not give offer any benefit to these kids that is not already offered to any USC child.

The reason Feinsten got so few calls is because we did not target her for calls. She was a co-sponsor. The dream act group I work with (dreamact.info/forum) only focused on about 30 key votes.. for 3 weeks..
But yes I know what you mean about dream act.. if IT has trouble.. how can anything else pas..
Are you KIDDING me?
On an immigration site, where people on here HAVE immigrant spouses .. and KNOW how complicated it is.. someone is STEAL bashing Dream Act..?
I can't TAKE this anymore. I feel like crying.

There is a route for those who wish to study in the US who are not Residents or Citizens, the F1 Visa.
But if this goes through, wo would want to use that, the F1 is a non immigrant visa just to study, much better to enter the US through other means, get Dream Act Residency, and then the bonus of benefitting from in state rates, not something available to Residents or USC's of other States and a lot lot less than International Student rates.

Umm.... anothera ridiculous suggestion.
If your parents brought you to the U.S. when you were two years old, for example, and you stayed here until you were 18.5 years old when you graduated high school, you would already be needing a waiver of ineligibility, and not allowed to get any sort of student visa.
We are not talking about people waltzing across the border on their 18th birthday and trying to get in-state tuition, we are talking about people who were raised here, graduated from high school and have an established residency in a state, and are being given motivation to better their lives and go to college.

Where are you getting your information on the Dream Act from? Glenn Beck?
The provision for in state tuition was taken out. In order to benefit from the dream act, you have to have been brought here as a minor, so some potential college student can't just say, hey mom and dad! Take me to the U.S. illegally so I can go to NYU! You have to have been here for five years before the act passes.
Besides, US citizens and permanent residents can get in state tuition as long as they're a resident of that state. What's the big deal?

Under 15 I thought, not 2.
If I am wrong please correct me.
And I did not think you had to enter illegally, so you could just come as a visitor, do High School in the US and you are good to go.

Under 16, which is, as I stated, a minor.
No, you don't have to have come here illegally. However, no one can come here on purpose to benefit from the Dream Act because, if it passes, it will only apply to people who have been in the country five years already. You can't come after the fact.
I just read about the DREAM ACT. I think it's great. They need to make it law!!!

Yup.. but it is people like the individual above (can't believe we have one on THIS site of all sites..) that is the reason DA did not pass !!
WOW I thought we all were familiar on how screwed up the US immigration system..I would be a Dreamact beneficiery..The dreamact is only available for Children who came to the coutnry legally or illegally before the age of 16 and have been in the country for 5 consecutive years, have graduated from Highschool and have gone to College for 2 years, we can all agree that as children we had no choice on what our parents plans were on this matter...THere was a mention of the F-1 visa for students who are not residents or citizens, being the fact that most of us have unlawful presence in the US excludes us from this option..We could go home and then apply for this type of visa but then the 10 year ban kicks in...All of us dreamies have grown up in this country, made our lives in this country, sum of us dont speak our countries native language or cant return for any particular reason...I came to this country at the age of 7 this is my country I know no other...I have a degree all I need is a chance to put it to work and thats what the dreamact would offer many of us..
