need info on I-94

Hi everyone,
Does anyone know what happens to the returned I-94 forms (the departure part)? Can they be retrieved or verified to prove departure 10 years ago?
Border Department in phone converstation said the forms were not kept beyond 8 years. Has anyone had any experience with that?
