It means it's a temporary ss card while you are in immigration process. Your work permit is valid for 1 or 2 years I'm not sure if they changed it already. that's why they give you a temporary card after you have your appointment and you get your GD you have to go back to the same office to request a card without it and they will mail you one.
For as long as you are in process and don't have your GC you will use that one for everything.
