JERUSALEM - An Israeli couple going on a European vacation remembered to take their duty-free purchases and their 18 suitcases, but forgot their 3-year-old daughter at the airport, police said Monday.

The couple and their five children were late for a charter flight to Paris Sunday and made a mad dash to the gate. In the confusion, their daughter got lost.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said a policeman found her wandering in the duty-free area at Ben-Gurion airport, Israel's bustling main international air portal. He said the officer alerted airline staff, but the flight had already taken off.

The incident happened on what Israeli media said was one of the busiest days of the year at the Israeli airport, with thousands of people leaving for summer vacations abroad. The Haaretz newspaper reported that 2.6 million passengers are expected to pass through the airport in July and August, an increase of 12 percent compared to the same period last year.

Israeli media said the parents of the forgotten girl were an ultra-Orthodox Jewish couple but did not give their names.

Rosenfeld said the parents were unaware they had boarded the aircraft with only four children instead of five until they were informed by cabin staff after 40 minutes in the air.

The child, accompanied by an airline staffer, took the next flight to Paris, where she was safely reunited with her parents.

Running the story on its front page Monday, the Yediot Ahronot daily quoted an unnamed police officer as saying, "A very cute little girl grabbed my leg and asked 'where are my parents, where are my brothers?'"

A female police officer identified only by her last name, Ben-Eden, checked records for the girl's family. "I saw her parents and brothers were on a plane that was set to take off in three minutes," she told the paper.

Ben Eden picked up the girl and rushed to the gate for the flight to Paris. "I ran quickly because I knew that every minute mattered. At the same time, the police tried to contact the flight attendants to get them to stop the plane. When I reached the gate, the plane was no longer there."

Rosenfeld said police would question the couple when they return from vacation, on suspicion of parental negligence.

Haaretz quoted the girl's grandmother, who took the family to the airport, as saying, "We're in shock. They're very responsible and organized, top-notch people. Apparently one relied on the other, and this is what happened."

The paper recounted that several days ago, an 8-year-old boy traveling alone boarded a flight to Brussels instead of Munich, and two weeks before that, a 10-year-old boy was left behind when the rest of his group flew to Copenhagen.

I don't understand how they didn't realize their kids weren't there as when they boarded. When they handed 7 tickets over but only 6 people were there? How did they not notice when they sat down in their seats? And with 5 kids, you need a buddy system when it's that crowded and you're traveling.

OMG, I'm thinking the same thing! I mean a 3 year old and you have an empty seat that you don't notice for 40 minutes!!!! How does that happen?! I mean, i understand getting seperated or something, but 40 minutes into your flight before you notice you didn't bring your 3 year old on board?!

Hubby saw this and forwarded it to me this AM.... I couldn't believe it. I don't have kids, but for the life of me I don't know how you could miss not buckling them in and what not.

I can't believe they gave her back to them!!!!!!!!!!! That was sooooo wrong.

I read this today too....I would not let go of my 3 year old's hand while boarding....Unbeleivable. Since the airline quickly escorted the child to her parents I am thinking maybe there was some error on their part as well...ie, why did they let the plane depart when clearly they checked in more passengers than actual bodies on board...

IMHO it was the parents that didn't realize their child wasn't with them for probably over an hour total...... unacceptable. She should NOT have been returned without some kind of an investigation FIRST, not after.

Sorry just my strong feelings coming out here.

^ they aren't even the ones that noticed! The airline had to tell them she wasn't there. I mean you buckle your kids, you keep them entertained. It's a long plane ride. How do you not notice that your 3 year old is not there? I really don't understand.

I know, I know.... didn't mean to make it sound like they noticed on their own! I just meant that much time had gone by before someone informed them!

I'm sorry but no excuse!!! My parents had 8 crazy kids running around all the time and we did a lot of traveling during busy holdidays... Most of the times only one parent present while flying or taking the train... No one ever was left behind!!!!
OH GOD... 40 min and they didnt notice!!!

Gotcha! You know when we are a large group and we get somewhere, we always count and make sure we're all here. I'm glad everything is fine in the end and she is safe and sound but I would have made the parents come back right away and talk to them right then and there.

Uhm, what???? You left your 3 year old child where?

You know, I read this story earlier and I was in shock. Usually before making any assumptions/judgement calls/opinions, I try to place myself in that persons shoes. But nope, I just couldn't do it. I had my 3 year old niece with me this weekend and I took her all over the place with me and I held her hand firmly. I tell her that if I let go then some ugly man will take ME and then she will have to look for ME. I tell her me, because I don't want to scare her. Anyhow, she knows and understands and holds on because she doesn't want to lose Tia Lily.
