Hi, guys.

I'm asking this for a friend- but eventually it's going to effect us, too. so I guess it'll be good info to have.

What is the process for filing for citizenship? My friend is a LPR and has been so & been married to his US citizen wife for just over three years.

I know he'll need to file the N-400 and pay the fee & biometrics fee and include the documentation to prove his country of birth, his passport, etc.

Will he need to file anything else as well? A G-325A?

After he files the N-400, what happens and in what basic time frame? How long does it generally take to be approved?

Will he definitely be called for an interview & biometrics or is that only sometimes?

If he does have/ need the interview, after that is over, I know he'll need to take an oath before a judge- does that only happen on Citizenship Day or are there periodic oath ceremonies held?

At what point does he take the citizenship test?

Thanks so much, guys!

I just went through this process and I'm teaching a Citizenship class right now, so this is the info I've seen personally. Right now the whole process is about 6 months.

Hi, guys.

I'm asking this for a friend- but eventually it's going to effect us, too. so I guess it'll be good info to have.

What is the process for filing for citizenship? Just file the N-400, include the money order or personal check for the $675 filing fee, two passport photos, a copy of his LPR card (front and back), marriage certificate. He can apply 90 days before the three years are up if filing through marriage. My friend is a LPR and has been so & been married to his US citizen wife for just over three years.

I know he'll need to file the N-400 and pay the fee & biometrics fee and include the documentation to prove his country of birth, his passport, etc.

Will he need to file anything else as well? No, he would just file the N-400. A G-325A? If the applicant was previously in the U.S. military, then he wouls send the G-325B.

After he files the N-400, what happens and in what basic time frame? How long does it generally take to be approved? After he files, he can expect an appointment for his biometrics in about 3-4 weeks.

Will he definitely be called for an interview & biometrics or is that only sometimes? He most definately be called for an interview, where he will have to take an exam. You can go to the uscis website and find the practice questions. He will be tested on 10 questions and will have to get 6 correct in order to pass. He will also have to write a sentence and be able to speak English (does not have to be perfect, but needs to be understable).

If he does have/ need the interview, after that is over, I know he'll need to take an oath before a judge- does that only happen on Citizenship Day or are there periodic oath ceremonies held? Oath ceremonies are usually conducted once a month. After he passes his exam, he'll get the appointment for the oath ceremony for about 2 months later.

At what point does he take the citizenship test? Answer above

Thanks so much, guys!

Depending on which office he is being processed through, your friend may be able to attend the oath ceremony on the same day as his interview. Newark, NJ does it this way. I was sworn in and received my naturalization certificate on the same day as my interview, but each office is different. Good luck to your friend!
