I know, I almost cried when I read it (laughing) but it's sad too...

I sent this to my dad - he's really conservative, and he said it was "dumb and insulting" - I guess it hit a little close to home... :)

OMG I couldn't agree more, but it is true. You have some courage sending this to a conservative. At least he's got a party. I am sooooo bothered by the fact that most of my in laws don't vote and pretty much don't know anything about their surroundings.

I was talking about the citizenship test I will have to take and I said something like...
"There are some super easy questions like, How many States in the US?" and they all gave me a blank look, I heard "48" "51" "53" "49" I was shocked! I was like my goodness I learned that in like 1st grade and have never forgotten. I find it funny how they have an opinion about everything yet know nothing. "Mexicans this and that" and I'm like "cause the T.V said so ha?"

Haha - My dad and I carry on a never-ending debate/argument about politics. I think he thinks he will one day convert me back to his way of thinking....

A co-worker forwarded it to me, someone forwarded it to him. I haven't checked out that demonbaby website, but I guess it comes from there...

OK...I see where that may be funny, but to me it is just as offensive as that awful "border patrol" game was that made the rounds many months ago. I have never thought that way. I don't know anyone so idiotic to actually think that.Cartoons like that, as well as others, only continue the cycle of ignorance and silly fears some have about other cultures.

I guess I just see it as poking fun at ourselves, and I know personally, I'm all in favor of trying to be light-hearted about my own shortcomings. I don't think it furthers any stereotypes - it's obviously satire.

I should clarify that when I say I think this is "so true," what I mean is that it's so true that Americans hold onto these stereotypes, not that the things actually stayed on here are true at all, they are ridiculous. Africa doesn't even exist on this map, which I think is the most fascinating part. I didn't notice for a minute that there was a whole continent missing, and then my co-worker commented on the fact that it wasn't there. I laughed, and then I realized that that also said something about me... So telling....

What I found amazing when I have travelled outside of the USA is that there are people who still hold the idea that the American south is like "Gone With the Wind." I have been asked if I (or anyone I know) owns slaves! And this is by people in Western Europe!

I think that biases and prejudice exist everywhere and everyone has them to an extent.

While living in Canada I got so tired of the debates on how we are the downfall of the civilized world, that I probably get touchy about the topic now.

Here is a wiki article about the map above that explains it.

ROTFLMAO!!!

I love the Germans - when I was studying in China there were three German businessmen in my class - they were really fun. It was interesting how that language affected the way they learned and pronounced Chinese differently than the way the Americans in the class did. The Japanese and Korean students in the class were better than any of us Euro-descended people, but it was really interesting.
