to the Humane Society? Good or bad idea? I personally think that there are far too many germs to take my kids inside. (The nurse in me.) I also am not sure about exposing my kids to that kind of environment. I haven't been to our shelter in a long time, but the last time I was there the conditions were deplorable. :nospeak: The animals were kept in VERY close quarters and the cages were filled with feces. Also, I was very much aware of the euthanasia process as I could see into an open doorway at the end of the hall where small to medium plastic garbage bags were piled against a wall.

Ugh....

Thanks to everybody who replied. I plan on going to the Humane Shelter tomorrow and choosing a cat. I'm not sure what age it will be. I'm leaning towards an older cat, but I will wait and see what I find. I expect to feel very guilty once I'm there because shelter animals make me feel very sad. I want to save them all.

it depends. If it's that bad of a place, i wouldn't even get an animal from there. Some shelters aren't so bad. We got one of our cats from PAWS and the cats had a nice room with a huge cat tree in it. They came and scooped the litter boxes often. The dogs had their own room as well.

I took my daughter there and we looked around and picked out our cat. Since he had a cough, we had to wait a week before getting him but we visited every day.

They had hand sanitizer there and i made her wash her hands real well when we got home.

The city shelter, i'm not so sure i'd want to go there.

Make sure you get a full vet work up too, if the cat has worms, you're going to want to get it dewormed asap. Some places will give you a coupon for a free vet visit.
