I was told that the current processing time for the K-3 petition is 6 months at a USCIS Service Center in the U.S. Then it will take an additional 2-3 months before the case is heard in Juarez. Is this about right?

sounds right to me. I heard you get an interview about 2 - 3 months after the I-129F is approved and those are taking about 6 months.

What's taking six months the approval or the interview?

The I-129F is taking about 6 months to approve according to their timelines on the USCIS.gov website, but I would think about 4 months from most past time lines.
The interview takes about 3 months from the time that the I-129F has been approved.

The I-129f cost nothing additional. With the K-3 you will have to adjust status which will cost an additional $1010. You will not have to submit a &0 dollar fee for the I864 or the visa bill fee for the I-130 since you will be getting the K-3. I personally am trying to get a k-3 interview and then will be trying to switch my interview to a CR1 interview. I already have paid the visa bill and I almost have my I-130 packet complete---I am unsur though IF the consulant will request my I-130 packet at the time of my K-3 interview. Its a long shot but if you are looking to get out of mexico faster, the k-3 is the way to go. Be advised thoug---your hubby will not be able to legally work for about 3 months after he enters b/c he has to apply for his EAD with the K-3.

Our situation is more difficult than most. He was married previously so he had a SS# at one point, but of course it is no longer valid. When he gets legal he will be issued the same number so I wonder if it will still take 3 months before he can work?

Mach - You should be calling them about it. I believe it is on the uscis.gov site where you check dates that says if they have past your date by more than 30 days you should call and check the status. Someone correct me, but I am sure i read that somewhere.

Angela- I did call. I put in 3 service requests to have them check into our case and let us know what is holding it up. Today I called again and was transferred to an immigration officer cause the cust. serv rep that we had multiple requests. The officer I spoke to told me nothing. Basically he just read the letter I had in front of me that says, we got your request, its pending, we'll notify you when we reach a decision. He suggested I contact my congressman. I emailed him today and left a message at his office. Any other suggestions?
