Just wanted to let you ladies (and gents) know that I'm a pretty seasoned knitter and if you have a question about anything I'll be here to answer.

Me too! How cool. I feel I could knit pretty much any pattern you put in front of me...whether I would want to knit it, well that's another story!
Have you gotten ANY knitting done since hubby was backlogged? I finished the sweater I was making when we were in CDJ and I haven't knit a stitch since..it feels very strange, but I just haven't had any spare time!

Well, I would recommend a visit to your local yarn shop, and not Wal-Mart craft isle, but an actual yarn shop. They should have beginner classes. If you don't want to pay for classes, maybe you could learn from a book?? Learning to knit from a book is hard for some, so if that's hard for you maybe the classes would be a good idea. You'll need needles, of course, and either find an awesome yarn that you just love and make a scarf or something or find a simple pattern that has cool yarn. The pretty yarn will help you to not be bored and not get discouraged.
Knitting is SO MUCH FUN and relaxing. I have become addicted to knitting and now have a needle and yarn stash!! My husband (well, when he was here) kept telling me that I needed to make stuff with the yarn I had instead of buying new yarn!
And Salsa, feel free to jump in and answer any questions!!!

Well, yeah, I haven't had a lot of spare time, but I've made 2 pairs of gloves, about 3 hats, 2 scarves, and I've recently become a fan of felting. I made a purse for my daughter and now I'm working on a fuzzy bunny that I saw on the show Knitty Gritty. If I ever figure out how to put photos on this site, I'll put up photos of my projects. Maybe we can turn this thread into a show-and-tell for knit stuff! I made my son a really cute hat that has little dreadlock-looking things on it - SO CUTE!!!

I'm sorry, I got so excited to find another knitter, I hijacked your post:shy:
I agree, find your local yarn store and sign up for their beginner classes. I would start with worsted weight yarn or larger and just practice your basic stitches (knit and purl) for quite some time before trying to actually make something. It will just "click" eventually and then you'll be ready to make a scarf. That is a good first project.
Are you the kind of person that can you learn from books? If so, go to the library and check out the knitting section. Pick the book with clear easy to understand instructions. Ask questions if you get stuck!
Edit:
Show and Tell would be so fun!!
This is the sweater I started when I was in CDJ.

I'll never forget the moment hubby returned to the hotel room and told me he was backlogged. I was mid row on one of the sleeves! Did not knit the rest of that row for at least a month, but I finally finished it right in time for warm weather (that always happens to me). Can't wait to wear it once it gets cool again!

I've never had patience for a sweater! At least not my size - I can make them for the kids!!

Salsa2 - don't worry about it!! I'm actually excited that I started a post cool enough to be hijacked. :D
Anyway, Salsa's advice is awesome, too! Starting out with a worsted weight or heavier is great advice. Yeah, and when I said a scarf, I just meant knitting and purling, so like she said, you get plenty of practice before you take on something more challenging.

Next project will be a cabled baby blanket, just have to choose a color (hardest part for me). I am going to use this, just can't decide on a color. This is for my cousin, they are expecting a baby boy.

Ice blue, cornflower, robin's egg...I just cannot decide!!

Robin's egg and ice blue look pretty much the same. Cornflower in a bit darker...I guess for a baby blanket I would think about how "young" you want it to look. I think they're more likely to use it longer if it's a little darker because it looks less like a baby color and more like a little boy color.

That's my thinking too. I don't want the classic baby blue color, I want something a little more sophisticated.

Oooh, I'm a knitter and crocheter also, but I just do it to keep my hands busy when I have to sit still, I never have the patience to finish stuff. :( My mom got the idea to crochet a blanket for the baby so she started getting into granny squares. I've been making granny squares, too, because just when I start losing interest, I'm done with a square and then I can start another square the next time. Eventually I should make a plan for what I'll do with them. :p Maybe I'll post some pictures of the squares I've been making once I find the digital camera...
Also makes for a great pastime during air travel I've discovered lately.
Oh! For those interested in learning, I recommend doubling up with a book + YouTube! Get the general instructions out of a book, and then search YouTube for a video of the stitch or pattern in question. There are tons of great instructional clips for free and you can pause and replay all you want until you get it. My mom has really been into this!

Thank you for the tip!!! I have always wanted to learn. I have a friend who does some knitting and crocheting (sp?). We have not been good in coordinating our schedules in order for me to learn.

Here is a site that always has THE COOLEST patterns - I have made many things from here:
http://knitty.com/ISSUEsummer08/index.html
And here is a site that has little online videos of certain stitches and all sorts of stuff - English and Continental both!!
http://www.knittinghelp.com/
Oh, and HOW CAN YOU PUT PHOTOS ON HERE?????? It is so frustrating to me!! I use Snapfish for online photos. Can I not use their URLs??? When I tried to put up photos of a hat I made, it was just the link.

Putting photos:
type this
[ i m g ]http://www.my_photo_storage.com/mypic.jpg[ / i m g ] but without all the spaces. (and obviously your image's URL instead)
Or, click the little button http://immigrate2us.net/forum/images/aria/editor/insertimage.gif and paste the URL in there. Either way.

Wow!!! I did it!!! It's just super tiny!
How can I get it bigger?? When I put the URL from the bigger photo, it doesn't work!!! Maybe I should upload them to photobucket??

Wow! It IS tiny! :) Can you try to get the URL of the full-size image? This one might be the URL of the thumbnail image.

I picked robin's egg! It came in the mail yesterday and I got through the border and set up row last night. I forgot how relaxing knitting is for me. Hope it will help my stress level!
I found a pic of the blanket I am making:

Hopefully, mine will look like that in a few months!

It's marinating on the shelf in the closet. With all the excitement of having hubby home and moving in to a new apartment, I've been neglecting my knitting. I would estimate that I am about halfway finished. It's for a halloween baby, so I need to get started again!!
