For anyone else that filed an ITIN application with their 2006 taxes...have you received a response yet?

We mailed the application with our tax return at the end of March and haven't received anything in the mail. They cashed our check. I called the IRS and all she could tell me is that it is processing. How long does it usually take?

Hi, we filed for an ITIN with our 2006 tax return as well. We filed our return in February. We recieved the ITIN in March, so it took about 4 weeks. On the application instructions, it says it normally takes about 4-6 weeks. You've been waiting for a really long time. Did you mail the packet to the IRS
ITIN Operation in Austin,Texas? Good luck!

I have no idea why it's taking so long then. Maybe they are just backed up, since a lot of people file in March and April??? I don't know, but I hope everything is ok!

It really shouldn't be taking that long since we filed ours then too. Call the Itin unit number. They will at least tell you if the ITIN has been issued. Also go over all teh info with them and make sure it's correct(name, mailing address,etc.). Ask the operator to send a recertifcation form out again and they will send a paper that can be used as his ITIN. I doubt that you are going to be audited, the IRS screws up soo much with ITIN numbers its probably just an incorrect address or name problem.

Hey everyone, I know this thread is old. I have a question though regarding ITIN's and claiming taxes. My fiance got his ITIN probably over 3 years ago. He has never claimed taxes though because we never understood how to do it. Even though he works with an invalid social, when he gets his w2's he would go to a notario or something and they would file it for him? Or is this something I could do online myself?

Salsa, we only received my husband's ITIN last week!! I also filed in February. They did our taxes and I got our tax return in June, and just the other day got the ITIN in the mail! Maybe yours is on the way too!
Try not to worry!

You can paper file with an ITIN same as with a social security number, as long as you have the ITIN already.

www.irs.gov has a pretty good explanation, but I'm not sure about e-filing because we applied for the ITIN this year and cannot e-file the first year.
