Hi All;
I was wondering if there is some sort of beginner's guide to immigration reform. From my personal experience, I have felt a giant lack of misinformation exists among the public regarding marrying someone who EWI'd and I would like to do something about that. I notice that even the movies make it look like marrying someone who EWI'd results easily in their visa (most recently La Misma Luna which was otherwise great). I was personally misinformed until this year. This goes for my friends and family as well. I would like to know why the misinformation regarding marriage to an EWIer and immigration in general exists and what I can do about it. Also, do you think informing people of the immense difficulties involved in someone who EWI'd getting their visa is a good way to get people's sympathy and contribute to reform?

So far, I've written to my congress, informed those I'm close to, and signed the petitions on this forum you posted. I'm far too nervous to do anything locally because i live on the border, and people are constantly turning others in to the border patrol. Actually, I feel like I live in the perfect environment do something if it weren't for being scared my husband would get turned in.

Any suggestions for where to get started? From your personal experiences advocating, what routes do you see as most effective?

Thanks!

I feel like you that people need to know what is going on with American Families. There is American Families United who is working very closely with the Hispanic Caucus you can join the group and they will keep you posted on any progress. I would also like to encourage you to visit the Dream Act Forum if you haven't already they are also trying to keep close contact with Senators and Congress on these issues. I live in El Paso and the only advocacy that I have read about here is the Border Network for Human Rights. So maybe you can look for something local.

Hi, Thanks! I joined American Families United, and will visit the Dream Act Forum. There is a local group here that sets up water stations in the desert for migrants, and other groups providing that sort of aid (I looked it up). I hope people continue to post ideas and advocacy related events and ideas. I'm really interested.

Always lead by example. Show those who may have doubts that you and the rest of the immigrant community have all of the qualities befit the American people. The best way to do this is through hard work. Americans value hard work. Show 'em a thing or two.

I say one of the best forms of advocacy is making sure your closest friends and family know the law as well as you do. They can teach the ignorant amongst us when you are not around.

You can always go to your church. Almost all the Protestant & Catholic denominations have some type of political action group.
