Anyone know how long you can postpone going to the k-1 interview? For example if you get the letter in October, how long do you have until your letter "expires"? Also, can you apply for an extension?

An approved petition is valid for four months. If the consulate doesn't get the fiance packet interview to you in a timely fashion, you can request that they extend the validity.
Otherwise, you have to request an extension -- I don't know the rules for giving one but I would think the fact that they give open appointment for K1 interviews would mean they might be less likely to provide an extension.

That confirms what I thought I had read somewhere...4 months.
Thanks, kitkat

Does that mean that once I receive the initial interview packet from CDJ that my fiance can go the interview anytime as long as it is within 4 months the date the packet is sent from CDJ?

That is what I understand. We are currently waiting for our NOA 2. I have heard other people say that the info inside the packet should tell you the expiration date...which should be 4 months.

Thanks Tracy for the info about the SSN. That is going to be extremely helpful.

You're welcome! It was invaluable to me so I feel compelled to 'pass it on'. :)
