I know we can't start doing the waiver packet too early because the information has to be as up to date as possible, so when are we supposed to start doing the waiver application ???

I would say get started on writing it now and know what evidence you are going to need. get them within a couple months before interview.

Just have all your letters prepared and then when you are ready to finalize the packet-date the letters. Make sure you add lots of family photos in your packet.
When I submitted mine, it was 2 inches thick!

There is some info you can prepare long in advance. Like bout economy, political situation of the country, health, ecology. Those staff could be prepared in advance. Also you can start with the waiver and then closer to the Interview date just polish it.
Good luck.

I tried to pull in as much statistic info as possible from the US gov't including the cia country stats website, national institute of health etc...
Hard for one Federal agency of the US to refute the fact findings of another....

These are some sites that I used for various parts of my letter: US Census Bureau, CIA, Nat'l Institute of Health, US Dept of Justice, US Dept of Education, US Nat'l Library of Medicine, NIMH, World Health Organization, Department of State, US News and World Report, Dept of State, US Dept of Labor, Social Security Administration, Dept of Health and Human Services, Amnesty International...That's all can think of right now.

Our hardship letters were prepared over a year before they were received and approved. I did however worry about that and wondered if they would deny it or ask for more information regarding that. Luckily for us, they didn't ask and it got approved. I agree with the other poster that said to prepare as much as you can now and then polish it off just before you need to with current dates. Best of luck to you!

i definitely started mine already--the things that can be researched in advance, especially, but i am also being mindful of the other things that i will need and keeping a list of letters, etc. that i will need to get. also, start requesting medical records now for any past (not ongoing or current) conditions since the records aren't going to change and requesting and getting them can be a hassle.
