Yesterday I spoke to my Congressman's Immigration representative and was telling her about my husbands removal proceeding in Oct.

She told me that ther could not help us with this and explained how writing a letter would be considered influencing a judge, which I fully understand but I only called because a few friends insisted that they could help.

I did ask her how the laws be so cruel to American Citizens and how if you read the stories on this site it would make you cry.

She was very interested in the site and did not know about it before. I am very sure that she will be checking it out.

I was very suprised that she never heard of this site before. And maybe it would be a good idea to make our representatives aware of this site, so they could learn first hand about what immigration laws do to American Families and how hard it is to battle the monster that they have created.

Also, there is no way they can fix the immigration system if they have no clue to the fall out it creates.

Just an idea. Let me know what you all think.

I'm not sure that writing a letter would be influencing a judge.

These adjudicators deny wavers by saying that the intent of congress by requiring "extreme" hardship was to limit the wavers to only those with extreme circumstances beyond family separation and financial issues.

Why is it that congress is afraid to tell the adjudicators, "What we meant when we wrote this law was ...." I guess its just easier for them to leave it vague and open to interpretation.

I'm certain that if you talked to most any Senator or Congressman personally and asked them if separating an American Citizen from thier spouse and children for ten years would be considered an "Extreme" hardship, they would say yes.

Truth be told, I doubt that many of our representatives even know what the law is. Even the ones who voted for the awful 1996 legislation that created this mess are unaware of the incredible pain and devistation that they have brought upon thier own citizens.

Most immigration lawyers do not know about this site. And I agree with sdgcas that most congresspeople don't even understand what the law says about marriage to an unlawfully present person. I would guess most think there is a fairly simple process for legalization.

Unfortunately most congressmen and senators think once you marry a USC the legalization process is very simple. They have absolut no clue about the 10 year bar etc.
The American Families United organization is trying to educate our "politicians"about the unfair treatment of some US spouses. You can check them out at :www.americanfamiliesunited.org and you can join the group. Thanks,
