Do you have to have a lawyer represent you to ask for a voluntary departure? Can anyone give me advice. I need help for my SIL. She was detained and let go on an ankle monitor. Her husband was detained as well. They have no money saved and we have to get all of their stuff back to mexico also. I called a lawyer, but she charges $800. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Hello. I don't have any advice. You might try logging into Laurel Scott's chat next Wednesday at 11 am CST. Also, you may be able to find a lawyer and just do a consultation. I thought (and honestly have no clue) that on a voluntary departure you receive some paperwork to turn in at the consulate and they give you a day to be there by. Hopefully, someone else will chime in and help.
They may want to sell some of their stuff to make some money and buy what they need once they get back to Mexico. It is a difficult process to take a lot of furniture and stuff into Mexico. Good luck.
