So, I just got the docket for the Unauthorized Practice of Law (UPL) committee. The docket says what type of thing each person is accused of - tax forms preparation, immigration forms prep, claiming to be an attorney, etc. I can't share specifics, of course, but I have to say I cannot believe how many people are out there fraudulently claiming to be attorneys. That's just scary.

On one of the other forums there is an attorney that continuously warns posters about UPL, that posting our experience or advice based on our experience amounts to UPL.
Hopefully that isn't the opinion of this committee.

You normally only get in trouble when you start charging or gaining an income from it in some way. Laws regarding UPL were not meant to prevent people from sharing information.
The practice of law is generally defined as applying the law to a particular set of facts in a person's case. Now, technically when someone gives you their story and you make a suggestion on what to do, yea, that's practicing law. Just like if someone scrapes his knee and you tell him he needs to put antibiotic on it, you're practicing medicine. But the UPL committee is too busy to go after people who are just trying to help each other for free. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it if I were you.
I can just about guarantee that everyone on this docket list has been charging for their services.

Just change your location to Arizona, no UPL.

Decided to edit out that last post. I don't want to ruffle any feathers when I don't need to.
