I know that a few of you have recommended we contact our state Senators regarding my sister's husbands case to find out if they can possibly find something out. I just have one question: When those of you that have contacted your local Senators offices has it been by fax, telephone, or by mail?

I was able to locate the Sentors office information and assembly member, and congress women for our district.

I've contacted my senator via phone. And at least with a phone call you've known you made contact with someone. With a fax or email, it feels like it goes into black hole (for me at least).

You first have to go to their online website and fill out the privacy form. Without that, legally they cannot do anything.

I would fill it out, write a brief overview of the situation and your request for assistance, and fax to their office (I prefer state senators b/c they seem to have immigration liaisons on their staff). Call to confirm receipt of the fax, get the name/direct phone/email address of the person assigned to your case and STAY ON TOP OF THEM. If that person is rude, doesn't sound interested or it appears they cannot help, try another office location or the other senator.

Ok so I went to the website of the state senator for my district (Darrell Steinberg) and I can't find any privacy form. Searching on the web I found one for Barbara Boxer and she has an office in my town. I'm going to have to get it to my sister and have her fax it with her letter.

CE - A state senator won't be able to do anything. You need Barbara Boxer or Diane Feinstein.

Just as an aside, I had Sen. Feingold inquire on my case and they sent me the privacy form after I contacted them. If you call the office and ask for the immigration aide they'll be able to help you.

Be persistent!

Contact your US Senator, not the state senator. I called my senator's office and was referred to the section that handles immigration issues and they told me what to send them. See if you can find a website for you senators.

Oops - I did NOT mean STATE senator -- definitely US senator. You can save yourself a lot of time by just downloading the form and faxing to them.

It depends on what the purpose of your request is. They can assist with problems on cases but generally they try to make inquiries into status .
