View Full Version : What lotions & potions do you use to stay beautiful?

Hello ladies (and wrinkle-conscious men!) My best friend and I were talking about our various creams & such that we use to try not to age and be beautiful forever and I figured I'd ask all of you what you guys use.

Mr. Adriane got me hooked on Pomada de la Campana and also Retin-A (which we could get dirt cheap in CDJ!)

Soooo.... how are you guys staying beautiful?

My biggest secret so far for keeping my skin looking great and wrinkle free has been to stay away from too much make up. Seriously. I do not wear any type of foundation and rarely use poweder. I use eyeliner, eye shadow, mascara and lip gloss. I have seen all the women in my family destroy their skin/looks by wearing way too much makeup.

As to lotions and such...the only lotion I have used since I was about 15 has been Oil of Olay. That's it. :)

I use Oil of Olay too! The one for sensitive skin.

I use Jane Iredale Mineral Pure Pressed Base. I love it! It's very lightweight and won't make you break out, but it just makes it look like you have beautiful skin.

I wash my face with Neutrogena cream cleanser (makes your face feel so clean!), then I use a scrub by Arbonne (helps my acne scars fade), then I use a toner that leaves my face matte by Jafra, then I use an eye cream and a face cream by Jafra. This helps keep my acne under control. I have tried everything and this works wonders for me. Also at night I use a product by Jafra that I apply a thin layer over my face and it keeps breakouts from forming and helps heal the ones I have.

No make up at all! I am to lazy to wear make up, but my hubby loves that about me! Of course I wear make up when we go out or have something going on, but 95% of my time I am a make up free person.

I use Aveeno daily moisturizer SPF 30. I love it! since I have dry skin it really works for me :)

I use cocoa butter lotion for my hands, legs, and elbows. I like the texture and the way it smells.

I rarely stay up past ten or sleep past seven, I don't smoke, rarely drink, and I try to excercise at least a few times a week. I think having healthy habbits is the best way to stay beautiful. I have been feeling my age lately, though.

I've generally liked to use 'fancy' (in other words, more expensive) brands because I always felt like they worked better, whether it's true or not, who knows. Anyways, my skin was always really clear and I never wore make up except for special occasions or going out or whatever, and then only a minimal amount of foundation or powder.
Then I went off the pill after being on it for 6 or 7 years and my skin went absolutely haywire. This was also around the time my fiance was deported so it could have been stress-related too, but whatever the cause, once the fury was unleashed, it could not be controlled and I had horrible breakouts for about a year. I tried different things: I was a big LUSH user at the time (all of their products are all-natural, handmade, organic, blah blah blah), then I tried Aveda's anti-acne line, which I liked a lot and felt was really gentle, but didn't help at all.
I tried some other things but nothing helped at all - then I got pregnant and the awful breakouts continued until I started using Cetaphil (the cleanser and the moisturizer) . After a couple of weeks of using Cetaphil my skin cleared up a LOT and since it was more than halfway through my pregnancy I don't think it was hormonal changes that stopped the breakouts, I think it was the Cetaphil. while I still get the occasional blemish, it's nothing compared to the nonstop breakouts I was having before. I've only been using Cetaphil for a little over 2 months but I have to say that as simple and cheap as it is, I am very impressed. I used to have a much more high-maintenance skin care regimen, but now I am afraid to screw with the cetaphil method! :bounce:
I sound like I'm doing a commercial for Cetaphil or something, but I had to share my most recent miracle skin care product. :)

Oh, and also I always liked Clinique dramatically different lotion as a really basic, light moisturizer (though I can't use it anymore since I'm on the Cetaphil 'plan' ha ha)

Alcohol...I wipe my face down with plain, everyday alcohol morning and night.

I use Jergens Natural Glow SPF moisturizer on my face in the daytime.

I only wear makeup for occasions, and wear a hat in the sun.

i don't wear makeup...i mean, i'll put on a little eyeliner if i go out dancing, but that's the extent of it...though i kind of want to buy that makeup that's white and turns the color of your skin just to see if it works.

I follow my nanny and grandma's advice they both died at 74 & 67 respectively with absolutely no wrinkles what so ever

Hats in the sun, sunblock, drink lots of water, baby lotion is wonderful for skin and moisture and rest. So far so good although I love soda and sometimes forget my sunblock other than that I only have laugh lines cause I'm a laugher baby yeah!!!

@ratito921 That's the best advice one can give, very important.

Other than that, Oil of Olay Regenerist has been highly rated.
Expensive products if you have skin conditions.
Estee Lauder has an excellent undereye product - popular seller for many years.

Botox if you begin in your 30s for preventive but must be started early.

Fillers/treatments/surgeries.

No miracle cures on the store shelves!

I've been taking fish oils and hawaiian spirulina for quite a while now. Also epsom salt baths - I heard this releases toxic out of the body.

Palmers cocoa tummy butter pregnant or not pregnant.

I drink a lot of water.

Oil of Olay like Pooh for my daily use.

Oil of olay plus blush, mascara, lip gloss and eyebrow liner on parties.

I'm 32 and I don't have a wrinkle. I have children and I don't have stretch marks. Sister in law thought baby Makayla will change how I look. Wrong.

I bought Proactive! Because I had the same exact problem as Inlimbo, went off the pill, broke up with my boyfriend at the time--and my face went CRAZY. Retiin-A worked for a long time, but then it just stopped being effective. Proactive works as well as they say on TV and I got a good deal.
I also use eye cream!! holy crap. And sometimes hubby says (right before I punch him in the gut) "did you forget your eye cream last night?" dang boys are dumb

I don't wear any makeup... NOT because I am a natural beautify, but because I'm lazy and I could care less. lol;) The last time I wore makeup was my wedding, and that was 2.5 yrs ago, besides letting my 5 year old niece do my makeup for me, and BOY do I have some hilarious pictures of that! lol
I lather up my entire body with regular old lotion after I shower. I am picky about lotions, because I have very dry skin, but just something off the shelf, nothing fancy.
That's it, I don't do anything else. Well, I do drink tons of water. I should be more careful about wearing sunscreen because I work outside every day, but I don't think of it or get too busy... My skin seems to handle all the sun okay, but my hair really suffers... I haven't been able to figure out how to keep my hair from becoming really dry and brittle from all the sun exposure... Any advice?

I bought the "horse shampoo" that Corazoncita recommended and I love it. I used to use Pantene but this gives me better body. I've also found that washing my hair every other day instead of every day seems to help with the dryness as well.

Mr. Adriane walked by and read this thread and insists that I tell the truth- I do use Pomada de la Campana & Retin-A- and I use DermaDoctor's Wrinkle Revenge soap & Skin Genesis serum & Bedescu eye cream.... and sometimes Pro-Activ's refining mask only (I get it off e-bay.) Mr. Adriane turns up his nose at all this- but he uses most of it too!

I'll have to try those fish oil capsules, JMJR, you are one hot mama!

Adriane
05-09-2008, 05:45 AM
Well, I do, actually. I know this seems odd but as much as I agonize about zits and wrinkles, I generally don't wear actual make-up unless I'm going out. I'm not a girly-girl- just a wrinkle-phobe!

I used to have really great skin- and then we moved to Delhi, India and then Puebla and then CDJ. My skin took a dramatic nosedive south- first I started getting funky blotches and then actual rough spots and then I broke out in acne like I hadn't seen since Driver's Ed. Then the wrinkles started in- not awful ones, but since I'm only 30 (only 28 then!) I panicked. And new ones pop up everyday. Hence all this stuff. Oh, and Olay sunscreen during the day. :shy:

I think it's mostly the pollution and the dryness of the climate- and it's effected Mr. Adriane's skin a bunch too (although he already had substantial damage from years of no sunscreen and living on the beach...)

It's weird, right before we left the US back in 2005 I was in a wedding (not mine) and I remember not wearing any foundation at all, just a little concealer. Now, there would be no way, not at anything immortalized in photos (I don't care so much about looking haggard for my co-workers!)

What a difference 3 years makes!

So I think it makes a difference, but who really knows. Having said that, I'll be trying all of these ideas! Yes, I'm an addict.

I wear clinique makeup, b/c its the only thing that does not break me out, and for cleaning in the morning and at night I use their 3-step "soap, clarifying lotion, and moisturizer". And like 2-3x a week I use their face scrub, it is awesome!

This is a fun thread. I don't have secrets, only weird habits that somehow mostly work for me.

Since middle school I have almost always washed my face with Clean and Clear face wash (it's in a teal and blue flexible plastic bottle, the product is white and smells good, can't think of the exact name right now) and only in the morning. I almost never wash my face at night, I just remove my eye makeup and go to bed. Isn't that gross? Yes, I know, but since I don't have skin problems I just carry on with that. My skin rarely gets too greasy or too dry.

I also don't use lotion - also weird I know. I do put sunscreen on if I am going to be out in the sun for a long time, and in winter I sometimes use a light neutrogena-brand moisturizer. When I have tried to moisturize every day, even with something mild and without oils, my skin has been too oily and I've broken out. So I just stopped.

I eat pretty well these days, and I've been putting a lot more avocado and flax into my diet. Actually I eat a teaspoon or more of flax seeds in my yogurt and granola or oatmeal almost every day. This has also helped me lower my naturally high cholesterol down to 185 (down from 220 last year)! My mom takes fish oil and I have thought about that but I am bad at regularly taking any sort of vitamins or pills. I just get lazy and forget.

I do wear make-up, CG TruBlend liquid foundation, eyeliner, mascara, a little shadow. It takes me like three minutes to do my makeup in the morning. I am not girly but I just can't go out without eye makeup. I am just not naturally beautiful. I need a little enhancement. I don't think I have any wrinkles, but that probably has a lot to do with a low stress life, sleeping enough, not partying like crazy, etc.

Recently I had an achy muscle in my leg and I was using some Mexican pomada which Fermin said would help. Indeed it did, so I would try some of those items for my face rather than going straight to all the regular aging creams at Target. I don't know why but I just don't trust those companies to really "reduce the signs of aging" or whatever.

I am only 25 and i've been using skin care since I was 18. I use Mary Kay timewise antiaging cleanser in the morning (you're supposed to use it twice a day but it works for me to use it once) and the timewise moisturizer. if I'm feeling a little less lazy I use the day or night solution and I also use the Microdermobrasion set twice-three times a week. I also use the Visibly fit body lotion on my behind and thighs as well as my c-section scar from almost 2 years ago. I have been using it for about 3 weeks and you wouldn't believe how much more firm my behind is and how much it has faded my cellulite! Botox in a bottle for $22 bucks is great if you ask me! BTW I had horrendous acne at 18 and now I have almost none! :-)

I'll have to try those fish oil capsules, JMJR, you are one hot mama!

:blush:Thanks:blush:

As with any other supplements, you won't feel the results after a couple of months of continuos usage. I highly recommend fish oils form Carlson's, it has lemon or orange flavors to neutralize the taste of fish and it's regularly tested to be free of contaminants. I noticed significant improvement of my hair, skin and nails. It protects my cardiovascular health for immigration purposes. I have super smart kids. I was taking Mother's DHA fish oils when I was pregnant.
Elias's skin is a lot worse since he's been back in Mexico... and when I was there I had more pimples too...
JMRJ, no fish oil for me... I'm a vegetarian. I know my diet is lacking in Omego fatty acids, which is what fish oil provides. It's hard for vegetarians to get enough... I do eat some flax...

Ooops, sorry Dorothea:blush:.

Well, hawaiian spirulina (http://www.nutrex-hawaii.com/spirulina.html) is for you. It is excellent for vegetarians. It is a powerful superfood. It also has the whole omega 3 family.

Alpha linolenic acid (ALA) is an omega-3 found in flax seed. But the ALA in flax seed oil must be converted by the body to EPA and DHA. The conversion is pretty slow and only about 5% of ALA converts to EPA and only up to 3% converts to DHA, if at all. Fish oil does not require a conversion . It is the direct source of EPA and DHA so the body can get the maximum benefits.

I believe prevention is better than cure. I believe being beautiful must start from the inside out. Creams and serums are very good also as the finishing touches for staying beautiful.

(Disclaimer: Consult your physician before use of any of the above.)

You guys are putting way too much thought into this...

All you need to do is eat a pint of B&J's Cherry Garcia once a week at bed time and before you know it you will start getting little fat cells develop under your skin and they will stretch those laugh lines right out!! Also works well for those pesky hip and thigh wrinkles!! : )

Just kiddin', I'm an OLay gal! : )

I like this thread!!

My skin care regime:

St. Ives Apricot Peach scrub just to remove the daily dirt and oil. Avon's light skin moisturizer. No makeup, just a little bit of mineral powder. I LOVE tons of mascara. My lashes are naturally long and curly but I love to have them just POP!! I am very girly and I do love eye makeup maybe too much. I love MAC products. I really don't wear too much overall face stuff like creams, and foundations and such. But eye makeup is the BOMB!! I don't have any wrinkles yet! I get good skin from my mommy!

I was blessed with great skin. I did not start wearing make-up until I was 18, not because I did not want to, but because I was not allowed (yes, I was a deprived child ).

Anyway, when I did start wearing make-up, I hated it. I did not know how to wear it. I went to have a make-over at Merle Norman and they made me look like a clown. I was not happy at all. I decided to only buy the mascara, combination lip-liner/lipstick pencil (I love it, its so convenient and it lasts me over a year) and the loose powder. I have a natural two-tone shade on my eyelids (I told you I was blessed) so I refused the blue and purple eye-shadow they said looked gorgeous on me, :fright: yeah, right! I tried to experiment myself and, actually believed I had done a good job until I saw a couple of pictures of myself and, immediately, decided it was best to give it up and go a-la-naturale. Less hassle.

I, later, did buy some eye shadow that I was content with, but it is a natural shade (I still use it) just to wear on special ocasions to look a little more refined. No matter how much I over do it, it still looks natural.

As for skin care, I only used dove soap and water.

My biggest mistake was not wearing sunscreen and not drinking enough water during the time I ran my plant nursery. I gained a few wrinkles as a result. However, it still was not too bad until I had to deal with this last step of my hubby's immigration process. Geez, why did they have to make him stay?! I have really aged this past year. My skin has gotten so blotchy that I, actually, have to wear foundation sometimes and for skin care I now use ANY Mary Kay product that says it helps slow down the aging process.

Its not that I am vain (at least I don't think so), but I am 36 years old and I feel like I'm in my early 20s or younger, sometimes. Besides, We are, just now, starting our family. I still want to feel and act young when my babies are in their school years. But I will probably seem a little ridiculous to the rest of the parents or worse, my kids. Can you imagine them telling me to act my age?! Eeek!!

BUT, what really is starting to bother me is that my mother is 60 years old and sometimes she looks way younger than me! And it all started after this awful stage in the immigration process began!!! Shoot (this is not meant to represent a bad word), up until our CDJ appt. the process was a breeze. Why didn't I look for you guys a lot sooner?! :bang:

Wow, I need another cup of coffee! I seem to be having some serious frustation problems this morning.

I use cocoa butter lotion for my hands, legs, and elbows. I like the texture and the way it smells.

I must try this. If it works for me too, I'll love you forever. I know it won't fix the existing damage but if it stops it, that would be awsome!

... I haven't been able to figure out how to keep my hair from becoming really dry and brittle from all the sun exposure... Any advice?

I have this same issue and I wear a baseball cap the majority of the time on weekends or in the afternoons if I'm outside.

You can use hair products like a leave in conditioner with SPF to protect your hair from the sun. Taking Fish oil capsules improved the health of my hair.

Gotta try it. Thanks!

Hey, we have the same products!!! I'll share another secret. A friend told me to massage my tummy with the lotion used to prevent stretch marks during the pregnancy to firm my tummy back. Well, one day I ran out of lotion so I had the grand idea to use the MK cellulite lotion instead. I have both, the day-time and the night-time. Anyway, it worked like a charm! I hate to sound like a commercial, but my tummy is a lot tighter than it was before my two pergnancies. I am not kidding! Of course, I also do some sit-ups, but not on a regular basis. I do them when I get a few free minutes or when I am not too exhausted before bedtime, but, honestly, its on a rare ocasion these days.

You're quite an expert!

Mr. Adriane takes these: Vitamin E 1000IU softgels, Mega EFA (EPA 800mg, DHA 400mg & Other Omega 3s 280 mg) x2, and Hyaluronic Acid 200mg. Is the Vitamin E basically the same at Fish Oil? I know he says he takes it at night because he takes Vitamin C in the morning and they cancel each other out (or something like that...)

:bang:

I'll second that. I'm not even 26 and sometimes I feel like I'm well over 30. How sad... I wonder if CDJ would consider 'premature aging' as an extreme hardship??? My fiance is also convinced that he's going bald from the stress :bounce:

You're quite an expert!

LOL. No, I'm not an expert. I spent a fair amount of time researching some natural ways to prevent aging without spending a fortune.

A body absolutely needs omega 3s. But overtime, there may be a risk called lipid peroxidation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lipid_peroxidation) from taking soluble fats. In order to enhance the effectiveness of fatty acids intake and to avoid destruction, you need to take vitamin E. Vitamin C regenerates Vitamin E. These combination of antioxidants is a powerful tool to combat the free radical damage in the lipids.

The vitamin E concentration in the red blood cells can decrease while taking fish oil. But it can be overcome by supplementing Vitamin E in the diet - an antioxidant and anti inflammatory nutrient.

I'm sorry if this turns into science, but your husband is smart.

I use Proactiv, morning and night. I don't have acne anymore, but I did 4 yrs ago when I was 20, then I started using Proactiv and haven't stopped since then because I'm scared it'll come back.

I do wear make-up simply because my husband says that ALL women, regardless of age need to wear make-up, and I agree with him, so that's why I do it. Sometimes I'm lazy about it, but I still make the effort to wear at least eyeliner or some lip gloss stuff.

I stay out of the sun. I never go outside to do anything, other than to go to my car, get out and go inside a building, I'm never outside. I don't do outdoor stuff like go to the park or amusement park places or the beach. My skin is very fair, and I want to keep it that way. I'm 24 and I don't have wrinkles yet... but I'm sure I'll get some by the time I'm 45. My mom is 44 and barely this year got her first wrinkle. :)

Angela - crema de la campana has a weird smell doesn't it? I tried it once, but I stopped using it because of the smell. :(

:bounce:How funny! My hubby tells me that his hair is almost completely gray. He used to make jokes about mine because I used to make him pull them out when they appeared. I don't want to start dying it. I did it about four years ago because a friend talked me into going lighter. I loved the color but hated the way it felt. The texture was awful!

That's interesting... I feel prettier, and my husband thinks I'm prettier without makeup. It really overpowers my face or something...

I saw the new MK cellulite lotion but I haven't ordered any yet. I can't believe that my c-section scar is almost invisible now!! It's not even been two years. I mixed broke open vitamin e capsules in with the MK visibly fit body lotion for a little while. I hear you on the sit ups...Itry to go to the gym at least 3-4 times a week, but with a child, a job, church, and housework it's hard to make it! But...thanks to MK we're covered! :-)

I have oily skin, so I dont really use a moisterizer. I wash my face with Clearasil and St. Ives aprioct scrub, Sea Beeze and a toner. haha yea i use alot of stuff on my face.

I also use a mask twice a week and Oil or Olay mico-derma scrub, it makes my face as smooth as a babys butt!

It's the MK Visibly fit body lotion. It costs $22 and you can find a consultant where you live by going to www.marykay.com and doing a zip code search. You can even order off of the consultant's website, but I recommend contacting them for payment so that you know that they are honest. If you live in GA I am a consultant. Someone else (can't remember their name) uses the newer kind (which I'm a bad consultant and haven't tried) which is MK cellulite formula, but if you go to www.marykay.com you can find all of the products on there and more information!
