This is the weekend to start planting for this area. Mother's day weekend is considered the time to start planting, free of frost. Still have to watch the weather for frost though.

Laurafern, how can you plant all you stuff so early.........didn't you have tons of snow and doesn't it stay cold forever in Wisconsin? :shy:

Lexi, here we aren't supposed to plant until Memorial day!! I wondered about Laura planting ealry too, but maybe she's just very diligent about covering stuff, or maybe it's in a sheltered area...

I plant early because we almost never have frost in May. I was just talking to my Grandma about that Memorial Day business... I planted in late April last year and nothing died.

I mean, if I do hear it's going to freeze I'll cover my little babies, but it hasn't happened for the last few years anyway. I like to have my tomatoes ready to eat in July!

Lexi - it's cold and snowy into April but then it usually warms up pretty quick. The last two weeks it's been cool (like in the 50s and 60s) but that's okay for most plants, at least in my experience.

My internet was messed up last night so I couldn't update anything but I will tonight.

Well, you guys got me all hyped up last week. I don't remember on which thread, but anyway, the kids and I went to one of the local feed stores and bought some tomatoes and poblano peppers. That is all that they had left.

It was ok, because I wanted a little one to get the kids interested so that they could stop digging in my flower beds, BUT, from there we went to wal-mart and I found some corn plants. I was so excited that I had to purchase a six pack. I also ended up buying a cucumber plant, as well.

Keep in mind that I was doing this for the kids. Well, the only thing that they were interested in was taking the plants out of the containers and stomping on the empty containers. They stayed busy doing that while I planted all the plants.

Since it had become my project, instead of theirs, I decided to make it into a flower bed. There was a corner that I had been meaning to do something with and it was perfect for our little garden.

I planted a small row of sunflower seeds on the left and right side. There is a tree in the corner, so in front of the tree I planted the six plants of corn in a half circle (it doesn,t have a lot of branches on it so it does not provide much shade until the end of the day). Then I planted the tomato plants in front of the sunflowers, corn, sunflowers. I only purchased four plants, so they are sparsely distributed. Then, in front of the tomatoes, I planted six plants of peppers. I only purchased four plants of poblano but my brother gave me two plants of tabasco. As for the cucumber plant. I planted it on the left of my flower bed, but I really need one more for the right side (maybe I'll find one more this weekend).

Well, finally, I planted a border of marigolds in front of the entire little garden. I was so proud of it. However, it looks like nature is trying to sabotage it. Saturday night it rained all night ( and I had just watered it) and all day Sunday. I figured the plants would drown, but they survived. I was relieved, BUT this morning I took a peek as I was pulling out of the drive and was horrified to see that a section of the board fence had fallen right on top of it. The wind blew pretty hard last night, but I never realized that it was that hard. Oh well, I did not bother to go look at the plants. Instead I called one of my brothers and asked him to stop and pick up the fence if he happened to pass by.

Well, he called a little while ago and said only one tomato plant was damaged. I left a space between the fence and the sunflower seeds, so that helped save the garden.

Few!!! We'll see if they survive enough to produce. If not, I'll just stick to flowers. I seem to have better luck with them. I'll try to keep you posted.

mine hasn't advanced. Maybe when i get back. I dont know if i'll have time to do it before I leave or not but what I will do is start the seeds. I have extra potting soil and extra tubs so i'll plant them outside and then transplant them when i get that bed filled.

Funny, I don't think we really follow the 'Memorial Day rule' in Wisconsin, even though like Lexi said it stays cold forever in WI!!! My mom just mentioned yesterday that they are going to start planting in their vegetable garden this week -- and they do the same thing - cover the plants if it's going to freeze. I guess we Wisconsinites are eager beavers when it comes to our gardens!

2004mms, that sounds great!! Don't worry, your plants will pretty much take care of themselves after they get a little established!
