I made hundreds of tamales yesterday for our little team cinco de mayo celebration here at work. I work with a bunch of gringos who have never had them before.

They celebrate independence day on the 15th of september, why do we do it on May 5th out in the US?

It's not Independence Day, it's the Battle of Puebla. I think that's why they mostly only celebrate in and around Puebla. My husband is from Puebla and they didn't even celebrate it when he was in Mexico. We don't celebrate it now either.

My husband is from Puebla too and they don't do anything for Cinco de Mayo. It's basically a Mexican-American holiday. It's funny what a big deal it is here, I think it's an excuse for Americans to eat Mexican food... nothing wrong with that, but it always surprises people here when they hear that Cinco de Mayo is not a big deal in Mexico.

That's the story of cinco de mayo.

Javi says it's just another excuse for Americans to drink. LOL!

Well, I don't know about other parts of Mexico, but here in Monterrey, 5 de Mayo is crazy, people basically get 5 days off of work and school to celebrate. Most people end up taking a vacation. In our sector of the city, there have been late-night parties and cookouts for the past 4 days. Mexican flags all over the cars, too.

My first 5 de Mayo in Mexico, and I can't even drink! :p at least it's for a good reason.

They loved them...one of my co-workers would pay me for them if I'd let him. Several people were really confused, they kept asking if they were supposed to take off the corn husk or eat that too...Funny.

In Mexico City my husband says they really don't celebrate it either...but they REALLY celebrate in September for Independence day.

3 kinds!!! OMG you must really like to cook, I could not find myself venturing in the kitchen with something so time consuming as tamales, but is great that you though about everybody.

Now you are gonna have to ups them to me:lol::bleh:
P.S. You should get those teenagers back to the kitchen to help you clean :bounce:
