About a month ago this was sent to all the major media outlets by a dear friend of mine that's like a mother to me. Thought I'd toss it into this thread since it's related to the topic. Although I'm not voting for Obama I respect what she says in this letter.
This message is primarily for those journalists, et al., and others of their ilk who are continuously pouncing on Barack Obama via his former pastor, Reverend Wright, who is ostensibly not the object of these childish, petty attacks.
It is clear that diatribes of late are not countering Reverend Wright's claims of discrimination, racism, bigotry, and imperialism; because they are mostly true. Instead, they are couched in anti-Obama sentiments--a projection of racist America's guilt for its sins against the meek and lowly of God's creation. I am not a radical of the civil rights movement in the South, nor am I one who is obsessed with racial issues. I am, however, one who is devoted to God, the One and only true God Jehovah, who, I believe, is saying to this hate-filled, racist segment of society, "Let my people go!"
You who have an ancestral history of castigating the character, abilities, minds and strengths of any people, serve today as a metaphor for the pharaohs of Egypt, who had to undergo serious repercussions because of their atrocities against God's chosen people. He is true to His word that those who inflict undue harm on His human creation will pay a penalty--"and justice will run down like a river!"
You see, I am not a right-wing/evangelical, born-again Christian, because I don't see any logic in that terminology. But I am a born-again Christian, just as anyone who professes to be a true "Christian" would be. This very senior citizen, of African/Cherokee/Black Feet Indian descent, became a Christian early in life in Birmingham, Alabama, and lived within the historical framework of racial injustices.
I was ordained a minister at age 57, and six months following a cardiovascular accident, was board certified by the Association of Professional Chaplains, at age 70. My spiritual journey is characterized by my love for all people. My ministry is inspired by the words of Isaiah 61:
"The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me;
he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the
brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor, and the day of
vengeance of our God."
Some of you have asked, "Is America ready for an African American president?" I ask, is Barack Obama an American, or some other caricature you have sketched? You can't be Christian and a racist, too. Senator Obama may not win the election, but he has the strength of the old black spirits of long ago, that justice will win one day; that he that the Son has set free shall indeed be free from all racial hatred, and from those who put their race and human dignity over that of others who were created by the same One God. We shall overcome some day!
