I went to the nearest office yesterday and I had with me my mexican passport with my stamped machine-readable immigrant visa wich also works as a i-551, my TX DL and my TX ID but the lady requested to see my BC, I told her it is in Spanish (african-american woman) but she requested anyway, even though I pointed out what says in the form and the web:

Proof of citizenship and identity
If you are a U.S. citizen, Social Security must see your:
U.S. driver’s license; I had this
State-issued nondriver identity card; and this or
U.S. passport.

If you do not have these specific documents or cannot get a replacement for them within 10 days, we will ask to see other documents, including:
Employee ID card;
School ID card;
Health insurance card (not a Medicare card);
U.S. military ID card; or
Adoption decree.

If you are not a U.S. citizen, Social Security must see your current U.S. immigration documents. Acceptable documents from the Department of Homeland Security include your:

Form I-551 (includes machine-readable immigrant visa with your unexpired foreign passport); I had both
I-94 with your unexpired foreign passport; or
Work permit card (I-766 or I-688B).

ORIGINAL CARD: To apply for an original card, you will need to provide at least two documents (I had four) to prove age, identity, and U.S. citizenship or current lawful, work-authorized immigration status.

If you are not a U.S. citizen, we must see your current U.S. immigration document and your foreign passport with biographical information or photograph.

GRRRRR!!!! :angry:

If you had your passport then why did she want your birth certificate? Give me a break. Maybe you can go back and get someone else who has a clue.

The SSA DOES make it difficult - I'll grant you that. Mostly because the workers don't seem to know the agency's own rules. I'd take the BC next time, but I'd also be apt to be a stickler and print off those instructions and hand them over. :D

I had the instructions with me from the net and from the form I took from the same office I was applying at, :curse: but she didn't care.

Anyways, last night I was telling hubby that everytime I have to deal with a government office I would carry the same briefcase I took to CDJ with LOTS AND LOTS of papers. So I did this morning, and the new lady not only asked me for my BC, she also asked me for my marriage certificate, BUT she was so nice and explained to me that sometimes DHS doesn't have the info in their systems fast enough and they can't approve a SSN but if I had all the right docs she could, so what a different customer service I received this time around, she even gave me my number and said the card will arrive in the mail. :thumbup:

Can you imagine if I only had my BC with me this morning and she asked me for my MC? I would be pissed, they should just make it standard, like bring all of these docs, if we need to, we'll ask for them, if not, oh well. :p

Good on you for having it with you - but how frustrating that it didn't even matter! LOL I understand her explanation (that DHS may not have all the info), but in that case, you think they'd update the online instructions to cover all the bases. So yes - I agree, it should be made more standard, because it likely causes people undue travel and time away from work.

But that'd be too easy, wouldn't it? :lol:
