apply for SSN before AOS

Is it possible for someone who is in the states on a VWP who has married a USC to apply for a SSN? in order for the couple to open joint bank account so they have somethingin theor nameto prove a bona fide marriage to bring documentation to their interview, this question is for a friend who married a USC.

she cannot apply for a joint bank account without a SSN..how can she apply for a SSN? in her position?

You are not able to get a SS# with a VWP. Some banks will open an joint account without a SS#. Bank of America for instants. All you need is your passport.

They should be able to add the spouse to a bank account without an SSN. You might have to check a couple banks. But they are definitely not eligible for an SSN right now...
