I did already send the I-130 about 6 weeks ago and got my NOA1. I was holding out for CIR, but now that it isn't my option, should I file I-129 to speed the process? How and why exactly does that work to speed things? I'm not sure yet if I'll hire an attorney for the 601, but I'd like to at least handle everything up until the interview denail myself.
Background:
My husband is from Brazil. He is an EWI and we currently live in the US together.

ARod... there's no harm filing the K1 even tho you've already filed the I-130. It won't hurt the I-130. Altho different emb.,/consulate varies, but most, it somewhat get the process done "faster" (a.k.a still a wait process). The only difference is that your hubby have to AOS once he gets to the States.
As for the waiver. Many of us didn't use a lawyer. I didn't either. Not because I don't want to but because we didn't hv that kind of money. I used the Guidelines/Examples of Approved HSLs from the I-601 forum and support from this site. If it weren't for this site, I would've been in a cuckoo house with a Denial Letter in my hand. Sure, I can joke about it now, but back then, doing I-601 and 7 mths pregnant, not pretty...:bounce: I swear, I thought I was gonna go into a premature labor just with the waiting period.
Anyways, you can get all the support you want here. We're here, regardless where you're filing. :)
Have you check the Member's List for those who's filing thru there? At least you get the idea who are the filers. Also, there's the examples of Approved HSLs that went via there.
