View Full Version : Tax rebate?

For those of you who have done more research on the tax rebates, I was assuming we are going to get one. I file with my social of course and all my husband's 2007 work was with his brand-new social, so there is no issue with that.

However, we claim his younger sister (who lives in Mexico) as a dependent and she has an ITIN. I'm guessing we are not going to get additional money back for her, but does having her on there with the ITIN also mean we won't get rebates? I just thought of this the other day. Anyone know offhand?

No, it doens't mean that YOU won't get a rebate for the both of you. You just won't get a rebate for HER. you and your spouse are the ones filing and if both of you have valid SSN's then you should be fine. You will only get 1200.00

Sweet! Thanks for the quick answer... I got a little worried about that for a minute. :)

No prob. I worked for a tax firm for years and it has been paying off. Too bad taxes aren't my thing now. Anyhow, hope the 1200 comes in handy!

Yeah, you wouldnt get a refund for her since she only has an ITIN. My hubby and I almost did our taxes together (for the first time) but when we read about the refund we decided to do it separately since we can use those extra $600.

I know some don't worry because they probably made more than 30,000/year but has anyone heard if you make less than that you will only get 300 per person????

You have to make at least 3,000 not 30,000 to get the 600.

Here is some info:

Actually, it isn't guaranteed that they will get $1200 either. If my husband and I didn't have any kids we would only get $600. Here's the link to the rebate calculator on the irs website.

Laura: If you file jointly and you both have valid SSN's and you paid federal taxes, you will get the $1200.00 and then an additional $300.00 for each dependent under the age of 17. In order to get any rebate at all (the minimum of $300.00), you must have earned a minimum of $3,000 in wages even if you paid no federal taxes (like my mom who earned $3,000.00, had $117.00 withheld for federal taxes but got her entire refund back for $117.00). For those people who earned more than $3,000.00 and paid taxes, you will get $600.00 (like my son who earned $13,000.00, paid taxes of $1200.00, got a refund of $400.00).

Anyone who made less than $3,000.00 will not qualify at all unless their income was from social security income which is not taxable and those people will get the $300.00. However, they must file the form 1040A in order to get this $300.00.

Even though my husband and I are married and have 2 kids, we're only going to get $1200. This is from the IRS website:

Q. I want to estimate my payment. Please explain how it is figured.

A. Essentially, there are two parts to the stimulus payment: a basic amount based on tax liability, filing status or other qualifying factors if there is no tax liability and an additional amount based on whether a qualifying child is reported on the return.

Basic Amount of Payment: Taxpayers who had a net income tax liability will receive a payment, unless they can be claimed as dependents on someone else’s return, are high-income individuals or do not have a valid Social Security Number. The payment is equal to the taxpayer’s net income tax liability, but no more than $600 for a single person or $1,200 for a married couple filing a joint return. The minimum payment is $300 for a single person or $600 for a married couple filing jointly.

People with no net income tax liability will usually get a minimum payment of $300 for a single person or $600 for a married couple filing jointly, as long as they have qualifying income of at least $3,000.

http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=179181,00.html

It says no more than $1200 and no less than $600 for a married couple. It doesn't say you'll get $1200 just for being a married couple. You also have to have at least $1200 in net income tax liability, which is defined here (also from the same link above):

Net income tax liability is the amount shown on Form 1040, Line 57 plus the amount on Line 52. For 1040A filers, it is the amount on Line 35 plus the amount on Line 32. For Form 1040EZ filers, it is the amount on Line 10.

So, for example, my husband and I had $130 in child tax credit (line 52) and $0 tax liability (line 57). So our total tax liability was only $130. So we will get the minimum $600 for a married couple plus $300 for each child under 17.

If we would have had......say $400 on line 52 and $500 on line 57, then we would have gotten $900 for us as a couple plus $300 for each child.

I would use the tax rebate calculator. It's really fast and easy to use.

I am only getting $300 for myself and then $300 for three of my boys. Although I have had my step son for the past 2 years his mother still claims him. I just started my first year of teaching and my pay checks did not start until Sept. I made just over $10,000 last year and I only get $300. I would have loved to get the full $600. I did not file with my husband because I really needed the money. I really hope it does not hurt us when it comes time for his interview in June. Legally I can since he has been out of the home for nearly 2 year but immigration wise???

From what you wrote here I don't understand. I made $10,000 last year and had taxes withheld. I am only getting $300. Getting more and more confusing.

So if I am married filing jointly but hubby has a ITIN number and we have 2 kids I would not get the 1200.00 But would get 600.00 for me and 300.00 for each kid correct? Thanks

I know I really need to dig out my taxes and figure out what our payment is going to be! But here is my situation,
we filed joint with both using ssn's but my husband didn't report any income so will I be the only one receiving a payment?

ashleypinzon

My husband received his social right before taxes, so I assumed that we would be getting the whole 1800 back right:yay2: (husband, self claiming 2 of our 3 kids).......wrong:crying:. We are still getting a pretty decent amount back (16 something, plus I should get the 300, or at least a portion of it for my other child next year since I couldn't claim her this year), but the way the talk about this rebate is very confusing! I used the stimulas calculator on my brother (he made about 7500 last year) and he is only getting back 300:wha:!

Thinking back on all the news reports and articles regarding this tax rebate...they all state "up to 300, up to 600, up to 1200". I know alot of people out there that are going to be very disapointed when they don't get back the amount that they thought they were getting!

This is what I keep trying to say. The IRS website says:
Eligible people will receive up to $600 ($1,200 for married couples), and parents will receive an additional $300 for each eligible child younger than 17.
http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=177937,00.html

A single person will receive between $300 and $600 plus $300 for each child claimed. A married person will receive between $600 and $1200 plus $300 for each child claimed.

If you did your taxes with your spouse, who has a valid ss#, you would get between $600 and $1200 even if he did not work.

If your spouse does not have a valid ss#, you will not get any of the money.

Can you use an ITIN instead of an SSN?

Taxpayers with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) instead of an SSN are not eligible to receive a stimulus payment. Both people listed on a "married filing jointly" return must have valid SSNs to qualify for the payment — if only one has a valid SSN, neither can receive the payment.
Not eligible at the current time?

If your circumstances change and you become eligible after you file your 2007 federal tax return, you can always file an amended return using Form 1040X. File the form after April 14, 2008, and allow 8-12 weeks of processing time before making any inquiries about your payment. See a sample with instructions.

If you're not eligible this year but you become eligible next year, you can claim the economic stimulus payment next year on your 2008 tax return.
