Were you told that you have to split your income 50/50 with your spouse? For example...
You made $50,000 and paid $7000 in tax payment
Spouse made $30,000 and paid $1000 in tax payments
so you can only claim $40,000 of your income and your husband now can claime $40,000 income and as your tax payments you would say you paid $4000 and spouse $4000.
I was handed a publication #555 Community Property from the IRS saying that if I file seperate from my husband I could only claim half of our total income because the other half is his.
