View Full Version : 7 Years in a Career Coming to a Close Today :(

Today is my last day with my property management company of 7 years. I can't help to feel mixed emotions. I'm excited, yet sad at the same time. After the end of the work day, that chapter of my life will close and I will begin a new one: new career, new city, possibly new friends. Our family begins the moving process tomorrow! :dizzy: What fun! I think that's the ONE THING I will dread-the moving part, lol.

Anyhow, it feels weird emptying my entire office. I'm deleting temporary internet files (so the next person won't know what website I live on, aka I2us), uploading important files I have produced in the past onto my online hard drive on xdrive.com, cleaning out my work inbox for the new person, looking through every drawer to see if I didn't leave any stray personal items. Leave important notes about my apartment community to my successor, etc. And then, finally, I will walk out of here for one last time. :bye:

Don't get me wrong, I AM happy. I'm just being human, I guess... I know it'll be fine. I just know it! Thanks for letting me vent. :D

Congrats Lynette!!!!!!:yay2:
Moving and changing is so scary! I am trying to figure out what I'm going to do after school, and thinking about leaving my little business I've been managing for the last 3 years is very sad to me. But it's a good career move, and something that really needs to happen! Just scary!!!
Good luck with the moving stuff. As soon as you get that all taken care of you'll feel much better about everything!

Lynette, Change is scary, but that's how we grow! I know this is a bittersweet time, but more sweet than bitter for sure! You are taking an amazing opportunity, so when you are scared, remember that you are doing the right thing!

Good luck with your move, I wish I was close enough to help you carry some boxes!! When does your new job start?

Try to look at the move as the beginning of the new adventure. Have fun with the boxes and crates and trucks and such. Make the move fun and it will set the tone for your new life. Good luck to you and congratulations on this wonderful opportunity.

I totally sympathize. Every time I leave a job I have this very heavy nostalgia feeling, with everything seeming more dramatic and emotional than it should be, kind of like living in a movie for a few days.

When I left my last restaurant job where I was a general manager I cried in my office the last night. It was so crazy - I hated that job the last few months, but it was so emotional to leave anyway...

Anyway, take time to remember all the good days and appreciate everything you have learned there, and think ahead to the wonderful things that await you!

Lynette,

Like everyone else has mentioned, change is, definitely, scary but with your positive and outgoing attitude, you will only encounter success.

Have a safe trip. You'll miss Dallas, but you'll soon feel right at home in Houston. Its a great city.

Lynette..good luck..you will do fine..its always hard to let go of the past..I know that feeling all too well. I moved back in 2005 from Mich to Texas..( I am originally from TX.born) but raised in Mich..this is all I knew..funny..I really did not know anyone..not even my own cousins..to this day I am still meeting cousins..but I have family here..it was not the same..I had this empty feeling..when I left..and missed my brothers and friends alot..but I can say after being gone for like 2 1/2 years..it has gotten better..I just did not realize I was home..and Mich was just a temporary place in my life..who knows where else I will go and meet new people..I pray that you have a safe trip..and let us know you made it safe..god bless...

Hi Lynette,

MGarcia - if you are using Mozilla Firefox at work you just go into Tools, Clear Private Data. If it's Internet Explorer you go Internet Options, and then in the General Tab there is a place to delete your browsing history.

You'll be fine, Lynette. I'm sure it was difficult to leave your place of business after 7 years of employment, but consider this change as a chance to grow. There are so many people who are too scared to take the step you are taking in your life. You will do fine. You are a strong, secure woman and I'm sure you will enjoy your new job immensely! Good luck with the move!

It's actually a pretty crazy story. Long story short:

I became her client in 2004. After some time passed, we became friends, although we had never met in person.

Then, she posted her job openings on this site. The salary was WAY less than what I was getting paid at my job of 7 years, so I didn't consider it although the position would have been the DREAM job for me in the career I really wanted to do. So, as her friend, I emailed her and wished her the best of luck in finding someone, and in that same email I talked about my future plans of going back to school and then eventually try to get into law school, but because of my disabled mom and other ties I had, I haven't gotten to that yet. So I thought that was that.

Then I get an email back saying: send me your resume. At first I was like, "no way. I can't move to Houston. I'm set in a career." But then, I slept on it, and a few days later, I was like, what the hey! I sent her my resume and cover letter. What I least expected happened...she picked me. And she offered me more than what the posting said.

I was in shock. Everything involved with this career change and move and moving my disabled mom came on the table. But, it's like I got this sign from God to go for it. I can't explain it. I felt like it was right. Also, Laurel and I have gotten closer than ever and I know she'd help me a lot and would be an excellent boss.

We met her in person 2 months ago to get a feel of Houston and to meet Laurel finally and personally thank her for my hubby's approval.

I can't really go into detail everything Laurel has done to help make this happen, but in a nutshell, she bought a brand new house, and she's renting me her old one (which is gorgeous!), for less than I was paying in my apartment (after my property management discount), in a beautiful neighborhood. My husband and I are still in the clouds. Reality hasn't set in yet. But we both feel it's going to be okay. We're in Houston now repainting the house to match our furniture and we head back to Dallas to get the rest of the things tomorrow.

So, that's how it all happened...or should I say, is happening. Off to Home Depot again! I'll keep you guys posted again soon!

Awww, you're a doll...thank you for your kind words. It certainly is wonderful not to have immigration always in the back of our mind. Now I can be a part of helping others get that stress out of their lives for good as well. You'll get there soon! God bless you! :)
