Immigration Can Scar Families, Who Need Love
My wife was 14 when her mother decided to leave. At a time when a Latina girl dreams of her "quinceñera" - her "Sweet 15 Coming Out" - and looks at her mother, however imperfect, as a model of womanhood, her mom disappeared. She chose to immigrate to the United States, through the petition of her brother, a naturalized U.S. citizen...

The immigration line to the U.S. is really a black hole
Victor Hernandez is in the U.S. on a guest-worker visa, as legal immigration is now so difficult.
What line must undocumented immigrants get in?
Enough of the anti-immigrant rhetoric already.
It's bad enough that radio shock jocks and cable TV personalities demonize undocumented immigrants. But what bothers me even more is the reflexive response by well-meaning Americans that undocumented immigrants ought to "get in line and wait their turn."
What they don't realize is that our immigration system is so broken that there is no line.

THE CHILD STATUS PROTECTION ACT
By Atty. JOHNNY S. ASCANO
Dear Johnny, I read your other article about aging out. My case might fall under that category. That is why I am seeking your advice on this matter. My parents are both green card holder, including my youngest sister. My mom’s petition by her sister was approved when my brother, my sister and I were minors. However, the visa did not become available until December 2002, when I turned 22 and my brother 24. I am now in the US as a tourist. I want to know if you could help me have a valid stay before my I-94 expires. I shall appreciate your assistance. Very truly yours, MR. AGED OUT2

True liberty for all knows no boundaries
We in the International Socialist Organization felt it necessary to respond to Jason Smathers’ piece (“Deport student, but change law,” April 9) calling for the deportation of our classmate Tope Awe and attacking our organization’s support of the Awe family.
.................In fact, the government has no trouble breaking its own laws when it finds it convenient to do so. This month saw the announcement by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff that he will sidestep three dozen federal environmental laws to speed up construction of a wall on the border between the United States and Mexico. We refuse to accept that legal norms that are disposable to the government should be unbreakable when applied to real human beings.........

Kids of illegal-immigrants rally for law to protect their parents
By Carrie Melago
Daily News Staff Writer
Saturday, April 26th 2008, 3:12 PM
American-born children whose illegal-immigrant parents face deportation urged lawmakers Saturday to support legislation that would protect their families.
Youngsters and advocates from Families for Freedom held signs reading "Don't Take Away My Mommy" outside of Sen. Chuck Schumer's Manhattan office, calling on the Democrat to support the "Child Citizen Protection Act."
"It's not easy, knowing your father can be deported at any time," said Elijah Salmon, 11, of Brooklyn, whose father is from Jamaica.
"My father has been here for me and my family from the day I was born," Salmon said.
The legislation would give immigration judges the discretion to allow an immigrant parent of an American-born child to stay in the United States, as long as they are not deportable for security reasons.
The bill has 30 sponsors in the House of Representatives.

Uniting American Families Act
Many Americans are not aware that gay and lesbian U.S. citizens cannot sponsor their foreign-born partners for immigration.
The Uniting American Families Act (UAFA) currently before Congress seeks to rectify this injustice by securing the right of U.S. citizens to sponsor their partners for immigration; it does not redefine marriage, and it would not affect the Defense of Marriage Act.

Like most Americans, David* can work and travel, but until he reached college, he couldn’t do these things because he was undocumented.
David, 35, is an SF State employee and alumnus. He was born in El Salvador. When he was around six years old, his parents legally immigrated to the United States because the American Civil War had created a job. So for most of his childhood, David was raised by his grandfather and aunts.
