What to do??

Ok so this whole immigration process has us financially drained!! My poor hubby is the only one working and he doesnt make a lot of money.... so lately we've been having problems I think it's because we're really stressed out because of $$. I've been looking for a job since Jan. but I couldn't find anything until today! So I was really excited Monday is my first day.... until I remembered that Thursday is my biometrics appt. of course I'm not planning on missing it but what should I say at my new job?? I know it's going to look bad that I ask for a day (or half a day) off during my first week and I can't tell them the truth because then I would be admitting I'm working illegally. I was thinking telling them I have a doctor's appt. but what if they ask for a receipt or something?? What's a good excuse?? Or is there a chance I could go at a different time to biometrics? The appt is at 3 could I go really early like at 7am?? Any advice is truly appreciated.

Vivi - tough call - but I would try to do whatever you could to make the biometrics appt.

well since you just got the job it is understandable that you made an appointment on that day because you did not think you would get a job that fast. What about kids,Do you have any? You can say you voluntered at school and you can't cancel because you made a commitment. Just find something and stick with it. I don't know if they would even make you take a doctor's note.

I would tell them doctor's appointment.. or dentist..

I would just tell them you have a previous commitment that you made before you got the job. If they ask, you better be prepared to tell them something. Though it probably depends on what kind of job you got, in my work experience lots of places want a dr. note.

Just make sure you tell them your first day instead of waiting until the day of your appointment.

Most definatly keep your appt. Just tell them when you go in on Monday that you forgot to tell them that you had an appointment and tell them it took you awhile to get it so you can't cancel.

Ok so I was planning on telling them tomorrow the manager is really nice so she would understand & we have a 1 hr lunch so I'm thinking I can make it in that time maybe?? Ok but today I found out something I was not expecting!!! They do backgrounds checks! and usually when they do background & drug tests they tell you in the job ad or in the interview well I dont care about the random drug test but I do care about the background check because that ss # does not exist I'm not even using my real name & it said in the employee packet that they even check your education....... Ok so since I read that I was just waiting throughout the day for them to tell me something about it... they didn't but I know I'm not off the hook. Ugh I have a bad headache just because I was so worried the whole day :( If they tell me I'm just going to tell them the truth that I need a job & that's why applied but that I should be getting my permit soon. I should tell them right??

Wow I really don't know what to tell you. Lying about your Name and SS# hmmm this is bad. Why don't you sit down with the manager and tell him/her the truth before they find out and at the same time show him/her your appointment letter and see what he/she has to say. I hope they will forgive you and you can keep the job.

I would definitley not miss the bio appt.

My husband worked in a different name for about 13 years, but where he worked it was not the type of place to do background checks. I hope it works out for you guys!!

Wow...what a situation. I am not sure what to tell you to do. I understand needing money, but wasn't there any jobs out there that you could have done under the table? What if immigration finds out that you were working illegally under an assumed name? Doesn't that look bad for you in the long run?

My husband has worked under a different name a couple times before. And right now his employment authorization expired back in September 2007, but he started at the job in January 2007 and has done such an excellent job they are looking the other way because they know he is in the process of "becoming legal" with the marriage petition.

I guess if I was in your position...I would tell them you had forgotten you had a drs. appt. They called and left a reminder message, and you cannot cancel...it took you 3 months to get in...hence why you forgot...and wait out the rest of the stuff. And If they catch you though, than explain/show paperwork proving you are in the process, and than you better hope they don't report you. And with a place that does background checks etc. there is probably a good chance they will.

When you finally do get approved you will want to start working under that name so what are you going to do than if you are still at this job?

I really would like to know what happen to VIVI. That was her last post, on April 14
