How to file for ITIN #

I have a friend that wants to file 3 years back taxes and I wanted to know how to file for itin # for him and his dependents..I know that he has to prepare his income tax returns for the past 3 years and send in W-7 for him and his dependents that are in mexico..what else do we need to send in? What can be copies and what has to be certified or notorized if not the original copy? Any help would be nice..
Oh and what does he put on the tax returns when it asks for the itin or SSN ? does he put that they are being applied for?

I belive all you need are the actual birth cerft of the person you are getting the ITINs... when they file their taxes, you just tell the person who is doing them to put the ITINs instead of the Socials.. (asuming the SSN is not valid)

I just tried to get this for my husband. Everything has to be sent in together. The W-7's and the application for the ITIN. The address is in the instruction part of the application. He also has to have a valid government issued id and foreign birth certificate. If he has a mexican passport that would be best cause that is all he would have to send. Any copies you send MUST be certified or you can send the originals. Hope this helps...

What about for the depenedents.?do i have to have just their birth cert? they are in Mexico..

And when I am doing the income taxes can I just do them on like taxact.com and then print them off and send everything in? Its for the last 3 years?

And on the tax return it asks for SSN or Tax ID Num but what if I am sending in the W-7 s with the tax returns together what do I put down if they dont have the number yet?
