Some of us are curious as to how preference could be given to the buddies of particular members especially in instances when a situation might not ordinarily follow the exact guidlelines of a rule and would border on personal interpretation by the moderator; therefore, also making a comparison between one view, another view and similar or exact situations but having been treated differently previously vs a totally new judgement. Personal preferences/judgements could filter in. How is that avoided to be fair and eliminate being biased? A lot of times human beings don't see things for the way they really are, only by the way think it is, right or wrong. I'ts sort of the 'ol human nature thing.

How, exactly, would anyone take human nature out of any process of selecting people for anything? Would it be better to pick the person with the most posts, or the person with the most time on the forum, or some other arbitrary but "scientific" process?

We are all human. There is no way to do any selection process besides one that would be completely meaningless without bringing human nature into it. Besides that, this is a private forum and if Xandrick wants only his best friends to be moderators he can very well do that. Of course that is not the case, but come on. These comments seem very much like a back-handed slap.

After 5 years, I think it's safe to say that we have it out of our system to promote buddies as mods. Plus, we wouldn't have asked for apps if that's what we do :wink:

if it's a big decision or we don't know how something should be handled then we consult each other before addressing the situation. There are not very many decisions made that are personal. The decisions are made in the best interest of the forum, the rules and what the forum is trying to accomplish. Luckily enough there haven't been that many problems. In the four years that I've been on this forum, there are only a few things I can remember getting out of hand. Other than that members avoid confrontation and just get along. Sometimes it's best to walk away than to keep it going. I learned my lesson a long time ago arguing over social security and illegals. I walked away.

Addressing the choice of moderators...

we have no specific guidelines in selecting. We publicaly ask who is interested in becoming a mod and choose from that pool. Rarely, but it does happen, we personally contact a member that has not showed interest if a majority of existing mods brings that member's name up.

Marie gave a good roundup for what we are looking for.

I do not recall that we have ever appointed one merely based on 'buddy'.

If you look at my total posts, I shouldn't even be a mod, let alone an admin.

@ratito921 Thanks for adressing the questions presented which could be viewed as propositions. I think you gave a fair answer. As for your comment about arguing over social security, I'd probably only look at it as assertions and improve my knowldege. It's just that sometimes people mistake assertions as arguing, unless you had a series of statements proving true or false, it probably wasn't an arguement.

The two different answers received pretty explain the differences that can exist in perception of what one interprets vs another and contribute to the answer of those questions.

@laurafern #53 Thank you for giving me a response. Right now I'm not really into discussing our respective-points-of-view because I'd be considering the vulnerabilities of thinking while using deductive/inductive logic. If I didn't know better I'd think it rang of Darwinisms.

Let me clear up your thought of a backhand slap since you brought it up and it does deserve a response. (Seem? Seem to who, you?) Let me clear this one up now and saying it with a smile!

I always thought giving someone a backhand slap across the face is terribly disrespectful and that I would never do such a thing. I would rather punch someone in the stomach than give 'em a slap across the face. Even more disrespectful in my books is a backhand slap across the face. I don't know why it seems worse, but it just does. It must be stated now that I have never slapped, fore or backhanded, anyone. I don't think I ever will but sometimes I sure think about it lately and but I guess you think that my mental backhand comes out on poor unsuspecting people, unknowing, trying-to-be-helpful people.

I figured 'making light' of this situation would help me get over such acomment...and prevent me from actually flipping out in face-to-face opportunities! (lol)

I think I pmed everyone who was nominated or applied but I think I may have missed a few.

I wanted to say that this was a very hard decision and if you were not picked, that doesn't mean you won't ever be mod. I think this is the first time where we had so many great people nominated/applied and actually had to turn some people away.

We may be adding some more mods in a few months so hang in there.

I hope I didn't hurt anyone's feelings! :wub:
